So I started doing some research.
Since I am going to be getting an apartment on October 6th, I will need a home theater. In the interest of using some of my stock pile gear, I decided to go with some classic speakers as my HT speakers.
The list of speakers is as follows:
2 pair KLH 17's
1 pair KLH 22's
1 pair KLH 20's
The 17's will be the stereo pair up front and the front and rear center channels. The 22's will be the rear surrounds. Since the 20's are 4 ohms, they are not the best fit so they will go into the bedroom with a small amp capable of supporting a 4 ohm load. They will serve double duty as the bedroom stereo and the TV rig.
I already have a very nice TV that is a great size for an apartment plus I have a nice DVD player and VCR. All I need for an HT is amplification and processing control.
After much deliberation, I have decided on an Outlaw 950 7.1 HT pre-amp/processor. I think it fits what I am looking for the best.
The amplification is going to be a pair of stereo tube amps and a pair of mono tube amps and a single 120W plate amp for the sub.
The sub will be an old 10" JBL subwoofer that I have sitting around. Add the 120 watt sub amp in a custom enclosure which I am heavily leaning towards concealing in a coffee table or end table and I will have a complete system.
Now here is the really cool thing. With the cost of what I already have and teh cost of what I need to get, my grand total comes out to $2294.65 and that includes shipping on what I need to get still. Alot of it is DIY stuff and I will have to build the amplifiers from a pile of parts but honestly, a row of tubes glowing just above the TV while watching a movie will be flat out awesome! I am hoping to have everything I need in place by December.
The real beauty is that not only is it tube power, it will be clean tube power with excellent build quality 'cause I'm building it myself! Also, the full range speakers have large displacement drivers with the smallest woofer being 8 inches (10 inch woofers in the 17's, 8 inch woofers in the 22's) and tweeters measuring about 2.5-3 inches. With a ported sub at 120 watts, it will be an excellent HT with nice detail and enough grunt to play loudly but not disturb the neighbors.
Now I'm all excited and done rambling too. I'll get pictures when I am done with it all.
