I need help with my sub...

Ok so I just bought a PSW1200 from a fellow polkster here and I need help hooking it up.
I have red the manual on the numerous ways to do so and have been given some insight but here is the problem I am having.
If I run my sub out on the back of my receiver to the LFE/Subwoofer input then I get response from DVD and everything sounds great but when I want to listen to music then I get no bass.
To test things out some I did go off of my right front pre out and into the back on the sub with the same input ( although the manual says they are only labeled for convenience and it doesn't matter ). This seems to work well for both movies and music this way.
Is this ok this way? My cable came with a Y connector but I don't seem to need it? Any help or recommendations would be appreciated. I have all the cable laying out before me so I am ready to start pulling and plugging at your command!
Thanks!

Hi Pasote,
If you are getting signal from movies but not from 2Ch music, then most probably problem lies with the settings in your reciever. Please provide more details about your equipment, then someone can help you out with proper settings.-izafar

I have a Kenwood VR 4900 receiver. It is a few years old now but works great still. I have all the manuals and papers on it and I have searched high and low to see where I could be missing something. It comes with a touchscreen remote so while surfing through that I thought I had checked just about everything there is to check.

I am not familiar with this particular reciever, and I am assuming you are using your DVD player for CDs also. In this case you need to try various listening modes. You should have settings for "Stereo","Pure/Direct" and "Dolby Prologic" etc. you should get sub signal with both stereo and Dolby ProLogioc modes. Most AVRs usually dont output sub signal in Pure/Direct mode.
If you are using a seperate CD player or have connected your DVD palyer via analog cables to the multichanal inputs then it will not do a bass management and will not redirect bass towards the sub.-izafar

I run my CDs from a separate CD player.
I have both my CD player and my DVD player hooked up with a toslink connection.
So even with running a digital connection from my CD player it will still not have bass management?
What are my other options then if I may ask?
Would it hurt to run my front left and right through speaker cable into and out of the sub? This along with the subwoofer output so I can have the best of movies as well as with music? -
You should be able to get bass management using digital connection from yourCD player. I seem to be lost here, maybe someone with that reciever might be able to help. BTW have you tried playing your CDs from your DVD player, and have your tried the dolby prologic mode?-izafar
