Guy has a complete system consisting of a pioneer sa 740 integrated amp, pioneer tx 540 tuner, and a pair of altec lansing speakers that have the model # 83 on the back. Anyone know anything about this model of altec? I can look at them later today but I thought someone might have some insight I could use before I go to look at it.

Cheers,
Mike

I have a pair of Altec Lansing Model 85 2-way bookshelfs that are about 7-8 years old with the following ratings:

    Freq Response: 50Hz - 20kHz
    Crossover Freq: 3.5kHz
    Sensitivity: 91dB

    These have a 5 1/4" w/1" tweeter. Maybe the 83s are similar.

I used to have a pair of AL's. Loved them.....never wished that I got rid of them. Any ways I was looking one day to see the exact model number that I had with the specs, and I came across this dedicated site about Atlec Lansing speakers. Very informative.

The link is to the catalog, that lists their speakers from 1942 to current date. Hope this helps you find what you are looking for.

Got an email back, 8 inch woofer, 2 inch mid, one inch tweeter. He says they are black with black grills, this ring a bell as to their age? Avelanchefan, thanks for the link but I could find that model # amongst the info. I am going to call and run by for a look see later today.

It's one of the more recent models, that Altec was NOT known for. Nothing to get too excited about, you're probably better off saving the coin for a hotel and dinner at the Polk gathering.
