This may be very very old news to a lot of you, but being 24, I never knew of this until 2 years ago. The Led Zeppelin song "Ramble On" is about the LOTR. Read the parts I bolded to see what I mean. I hadn't seen anyone mention it here....so maybe nobody knew that. I just think it's cool someone wrote a song about it when it was just the books many years ago.
Leaves are falling all around,
It’s time I was on my way.
Thanks to you, I’m much obliged
For such a pleasant stay.

But now it’s time for me to go,
The autumn moon lights my way.
For now I smell the rain,
And with it pain,
And it’s headed my way.
Ah, sometimes I grow so tired,
But I know I’ve got one thing I got to do,

Ramble on,
And now’s the time, the time is now
To sing my song.
I’m goin’ ’round the world,
I got to find my girl, on my way.
I’ve been this way ten years to the day, ramble on,
Gotta find the queen of all my dreams.

Got no time to for spreadin’ roots,
The time has come to be gone.
And tho’ our health we drank a thousand times,
It’s time to ramble on.

Ramble on,
And now’s the time, the time is now
To sing my song.
I’m goin’ ’round the world,
I got to find my girl, on my way.
I’ve been this way ten years to the day, ramble on,
Gotta find the queen of all my dreams.

I ain’t tellin’ no lie.

Mine’s a tale that can’t be told,
My freedom I hold dear;
How years ago in days of old
When magic filled the air,
T’was in the darkest depths of mordor
I met a girl so fair,
But gollum, and the evil one crept up
And slipped away with her.
Her, her....yea.
Ain’t nothing I can do, no.

Ramble on,
And now’s the time, the time is now
To sing my song.
I’m goin’ ’round the world,
I got to find my girl, on my way.
I’ve been this way ten years to the day, ramble on,
Gotta find the queen of all my dreams.

Gonna ramble on, sing my song
Gotta keep-a-searchin’ for my baby...
Gonna work my way, round the world
I can’t stop this feelin’ in my heart
Gotta keep searchin’ for my baby
I can’t find my bluebird!
I’d listen to my bluebird sing but I can’t find my blue bird
A-keep-a ramblin’ baby...

Yeah, the Zeppelin boys were big LOTR fans. Think about it, they were in their early twenties when they were making their music in the 70's, which is the average age people read those books. Plus they're from Britain.

If you think that's interesting, check out album 4 (untitled). Track 3-The Battle of Evermore contains the line "The Ring Wraiths are out in black," track 5-Misty Mountain Hop refers to Middle Earth's Misty Mountains, and I believe Over the Hills and Far Away from Houses of the Holy may be a reference to Tolkein as well.

Nice to see another LZ fan on the forum.

I heard Kashmire was about the Hobbit. And in Bron-y-aur-stomp on the Zep DVD his dog was named Stryder. Maybe coincidence though.

Another interesting bit of Led Zep trivia. They were big Monty Python fans and were the principle backers of the Pythons making their first movie...Monty Python and Holy Grail. I think the guys from Pink Floyd were involved too.

There was a huge Tolkien revival in the late 60's and early 70's. Everybody was reading or re-reading the Tolkien books. There are many references in Zeppelin. By the way, Zep also does the best blues. One of my regrets was not going to see them in Minneapolis in around 1974 I think it was with a bunch of friends who went to the show. That period is now considered by many to be the height of their live performances and some of the 1975 shows are featured on a live DVD they put out awhile ago. I still remember when one of my buddies' older brothers came home one time with this new album and said it was a new band called Led Zeppelin from England. He played that album and it blew everybody's socks off. He kept playing "Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You" over and over on the turntable.

Pink Floyd and involvement with The Holy Grail..

Funds earned by Pink Floyd's album "The Dark Side of the Moon" went towards funding The Holy Grail. The band were such fans of the show they would halt recording sessions just to watch Monty Python's Flying Circus.
