An open back speaker, possible?
Since the subwoofer project is a no go, I just dont have the funds to do it now....
So.....
I thought about building a new enclosure for the Pioneers, make them thicker, from 1/2" to 3/4" and from particle board to MDF
And to save cost on wood, I plan to cut the enclosure off to where only the woofer uses a sealed enclosure, ported however.
So since the midrange I used is sealed in its own 'enclosure' - and tweeters dont need an enclosure, am I correct in that I could actually use an open back *ie, no sides or back* for the tweeter and midrange?
Just curious...

AWESOME!
Thanks!- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -
You'll need to be sure that the interior cabinet volume for the woofer remains the same as before.Political Correctness'.........defined

I know....
I also went on PE in their box builder since they sell the woofer and entered the number and checked out some options on port, polyfill variables...- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -
Sorry to hear about the sub project. Was it starting to get a bit pricey?

Here is what I have planned...
I am going to use some Veneered Oak MDF or Plywood for the side panels, similar styling to the LSi except I am going with a 'flush' front with angled top and bottom and flush back...
The rest of the visible cabinet will be wrapped in black grill cloth.
The Tweeter and midrange will be visible, no grill -- the drivers will both be blue with a black frame, so they will indeed match.
The woofer will have a 'driver' grill since it is close to the floor and it could possibly be kicked.
I am going to use the Stock crossover, and that is about it...
I am going on Box builder and getting the port size, etc down and they will have a rear-firing port - flared.
And, will have gold plated binding posts instead of spring clips.
This is my project idea, won't cost much at all....
Should be solid down to 39hz.....- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -
It's completely possible to build a full range, "open baffle" (i.e., unenclosed) loudspeaker. There are many, many DIY examples, but also some commercial ones (e.g., the Gilmore Audio speakers, see http://www.glacieraudio.com/new%20Glacier%20Audio%20Site/Products%20folder/Gilmore/Gilmoreaudio3.htm)
The Carver Amazings were also open baffle.
To get any sort of LF performance from an open baffle/backless design, it's necessary to use a very large baffle and a woofer with a high (maybe even ridiculously high) Qts (i.e., relatively weak motor). This was de rigeur in the days of the "console hi-fi" units, which almost invariably had open-backed speakers in 'em.
Of course, practical considerations might make a subwoofer an attractive addition, but there have been many fine backless speaker systems built over the years. -

... wasn't obvious in the first picture, here's another angle. :-)

I'm ashamed of you man.
How dare you post those friggin corian countertops, from that assclown Gilmore. Not to mention, the girl is ALMOST as ugly and fake as the speakers themselves.
SURELY you could find another example of an open baffle speaker.
Cheers,

.... I find the whole "Gilmore" imbroglio amusing, too. I actually didn't mind his schtick, because I figured (assumed) he was poking fun at the "sex sells" audiophile mentality.
Never heard 'em, but the word on the street isn't so good. Guess I should've found a picture of some Carver Amazings...
BTW, speaking of sex and selling audiophila, have you seen Doc B's foray into cables?

(again, I'm hoping the good Dr. is poking fun at this trend in marketing, although his products have always, umm, oozed, a certain puerile sexuality) -
Hmm, those Gilmore speakers are funny....hehe
The girl looks like a man....
ANYWAY
The whole design idea of the 'Hybrid' Pioneer it to get the tweeter and midbass away from the woofer.
The other idea is to save cost on wood, which is the biggest problem I am having now.
The midbass has its own enclosure which eliminates its need for an enclosure all together.
My idea will be to put the port in a rear firing position to eliminate alot of the port noise that is heard with these speakers...
and to completely copy the front baffle of the original Pioneers, IE: Woofer, Midrange, Tweeter seperation on the baffle, and position on the baffle from the sides, etc....
The enclosure will probally be using 3/4" MDF - which will be a nice upgrade over the 1/2" particle board it uses now.
The side panels will probally be 1/2" or 3/4" Oak veneered Particle Board, or possible solid oak. Depends if the teacher has some laying around.
I would like to upgrade the crossovers too, but I dont want to waste to much money on them....- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit.
