OK, here's the deal.

Number one, I am pretty sure of it but can you confirm for me that the subs need to be broken in? How long should I leave them on low power settings?

Number two, have you ever seen problems like this?

My friend was complaining that the aluminum coating was chipping from the sub cones. He said that nothing has struck the cones in any way and the area where they were placed was kept clear until we can get grilles in. I was extremely careful with all the gear when doing the install too and I can honestly not recall any problems like slipped screwdrivers or dropped tools or a rogue fingernail or something that might cause the damage. He was wondering what might cause them to chip like this and what he can do to fix the damage that is already there and how he can prevent it in the future, aside from placing grilles over the speakers?

Here are pictures showing the damage.
