Well fellow forum members, my subwoofer box is nearing completion. I spent the day Saturday fiberglassing which was not that bad other than the fact that is was to damn hot outside. The first two coats were dry to the touch in about 1/2 hour. I ended up only putting down 3 full coats of fiberglass and beleive me, I probaly could of only done 2 full coats. With 3 coats of fiberglass, you can literally bounce up and down on the box and it has no flex what so ever. This afternoon I will be working on the front of the box so hopefully by this weekend I'll be ready to install.
Just so you know. When I first started this project I was only going to replace the factory door speakers and the head unit and be done with it. But one day when I went to Tweeters to pick up something, not sure what it was but anyways, the salesmen came outside to see my install. He said, are you going to add subs, my answer, NAH!!! Then he said, its probaly a good thing, whys that I asked, THERE IS NO WAY TO GET SUBS BEHIND THE REAR SEATS OF THIS TRUCK HE SAID. Not even 8's I asked, NOPE he said. For those that know me I'm the last person you want to say something like that too. So then I asked him, well what if I had the box fiberglassed. He then told me, Well, IF IT COULD BE DONE, fiberglass boxes start around $400 and up if we do it. So, roughly $50 later, the box is nearly 80% completed. So if you can't tell, it is killing me not to go by Tweeters until it completed.
The other thing is this. The Polk Momo MM 2084 state's the recommended sealed box use 0.35 cu.ft. per 8. Well I had boxes of packing peanuts laying around so I filled up one of the enclosures with the peanuts, dumped them in a 12x12x12 box, calculated the air space and I have rougly 0.39 cu.ft. of air space per enclosure. Everything seems do be going good so far, just dying to see what it will sound like. Well, I'm sure I've bored you guys enough. I'll hopefully posts pics soon.Money Talks, Mine says Goodbye Rob!!!! -
cool btw, the sub can put flex the box more than you can, so you might want to put a couple more layers on just in case. and just imagine the look on the tweeter guy's face...It's not good, very fundamentally simply not good. - geolemon

that's actually a sub?!?! my shop has one of those sitting out, and i always thought it was a quick-change module or some such thing... jeez... wonder how it sounds? It's not good, very fundamentally simply not good. - geolemon

if it didnt sound good they probably wouldnt have put the premier badge on it
-CodyMusic is like candy, you have to get rid of the rappers to enjoy it -
true, unless premier is just a badge of technology, not of quality (i.e. they used certain methods and materials so it's a 'premier' product)... do you know? It's not good, very fundamentally simply not good. - geolemon

yea...but id still imagine that they want to keep their premier products above and beyond the regular ones...ive heard a few ppl say that saucer subs are pretty damn good

Thats a extremely cool looking sub but but only problem using that sub would be, my box is only 10" tall. Told you guys, you can not imagine how limited I was on space. These are the rough measurements I had to work with. The box was limited to 10" tall due to the fact that I have a cab strengthner bar (I guess thats what you call it) across the back mid wall. I only had 6" max at the bottom of the box and 4" max at the top of the box. I had a total of 52" across the back though. So as you can see, I didn't have alot of room. The up side to this story is this though, the next time I purchase a new vehicle, the first thing I'm going to do is see if I have the room for upgrading the stereo equipment.Money Talks, Mine says Goodbye Rob!!!!

Alright ladies and gentlemen, I have completed my audio system in my truck. I took off work yesterday so I could complete it before the rain moves in. The only things I have left to do is cover the box in padding and vinyl and finish installing the misc. interior parts. As far as how it sounds, I was SHOCKED. All my vehicles prior to this one had 12" or 15" subwoofers installed in them so I wasn't expected a whole lot out of (2) 8's. Boy was I suprised. Those Polk Momo 8's are not only accurate, they SLAM for a pair of 8's. When my brother-in-law first heard it he was just as shocked as I was. Two thumbs up go to Polk Audio in my book. They doors are crystal clear with the Momos in them also. I hope to get some pics posted this weekend. By the way, thanks for all your help.Money Talks, Mine says Goodbye Rob!!!!

great work...where are the amps?
what amp do you have?
hope everything went fairly easy and im sure it sounds great!

Here is a full run down of what I installed.
Alpine equipment:
Head Unit: CDA-9835
Amp. 1: MRP-F240 (installed under passenger seat) 40x4 (doors)
Amp. 2: MRP-M350 (installed under drivers seat) 350x1 (2 ohms)
Polk Audio:
Front doors: MMC6500 component set
Rear Doors: MMC570 5x7 coaxial
Subwoofer: (2) MM2084
And I must say, not only does it look good, it sounds damn GOOD.:DMoney Talks, Mine says Goodbye Rob!!!! -
Your speaker selection is just right.
The sub amp is a hoss but the 4 channel is going to be a bit weak for those components. I know because I had one. When I went to bi-amping my MMC690's from running a mere 40 watts, the difference was night and day. Now that Im running this much much much more powerful Crossfire the difference is even more apparant, especially in the detail.
You may want to consider eventually upgraging to a gutsier amp say around 75 watts per channel. Trust me, as soon as you turn it on youll know where the extra cash went!polkaudio sound quality competitor since 2005

Hot damn!!!! Just returned from Tweeters with my speaker grill cloth. My truck will finally be completed after I cover my custom made fiberglass panels for the backs of my rear seats. I will post pics of the complete install hopefully before the end of the week. I do have a quick question though, should I use a hot glue gun to attach the speaker grill cloth to the fiberglass or should I use the 3M spray adhesive.Money Talks, Mine says Goodbye Rob!!!!

i vote glue, just be quick about it so it doesn't melt anything important - use a low-temp gun if possible (there's high- and low- and it should say, if u didn't know)It's not good, very fundamentally simply not good. - geolemon

everyone i know uses spray adhesive, thats more than likely what ill be using if i go with carpet for my next box
i think vinyl would be cool too though...hmmmm

I'm not too sure about vinyl Cody, might look too much like a foot rest (would say autamun, but I have no clue how to really spell that...)___________________________

*ottomanMacLeod: I guess youre lucky Polk has such lax hiring standards.
Josh: Damn skippy! -
yea but it would give it a much more custom look...everyone does carpet...

Thanks for the spell-check Joel... now I know.
Well, Cody, I would use a carpet perfectly matched to your real carpet for a custom look... if you cant get the right color, get something close, but a little lighter, then use a good carpet dye (looks like spray-paint) to get it just right... you will be very pleased.___________________________

the box will be the last thing ill be pleased with...
the subs inside is what really counts:D
no word on them yet either...i hate waiting

I absolutely love the look of vinyl compared to carpet on a box. Its a bigger pain in the **** to put on but the end results are much better.:DMoney Talks, Mine says Goodbye Rob!!!!
-
if im feeling really daring ill put expandable foam underneathe it to give it the "poofy" look/feel
-CodyMusic is like candy, you have to get rid of the rappers to enjoy it -
Thats pretty much what I did, I wraped the box in 1/8" foam first and then wraped it in vinyl.Money Talks, Mine says Goodbye Rob!!!!
-
have any problems with it being "lumpy" in some places?
ill probably carpet the bottom and pretty much everthing else thats not seen...

Yeah sounds good. You should be able to get the sheets of foam off a roll at wal-mart too. Though they have limited vinyl selection... Only stuff I've seen is for table-cloths.___________________________
