A platform would look good and keep things nice and stable, good idea. You will need some gasket material for the driver and port. Most people use closed cell foam.

Does PE sell the gasket material? I think I have seen it before...

Looks good. Adire calls for 3.5" legs in case you missed it. Also, what is the grill cloth for?

Grill cloth is to wrap the cabinet -- going with the Definitive look, except with Oak caps to match the furniture in the den in which it is going....

I plan to attach the cloth with a staple gun.....

Is there any input on this Amplifier?

    http://www.acoustic-visions.com/~acoustic/products/subwoofer_amplifiers/rythmik350/

For 30 dollars more, 100 more watts, a subsonic filter and everything...

    Looks SOLID...any input?

Well, from what I have been reading and looking it -- it looks like this subwoofer may stomp my subwoofer, however that is a good thing as this subwoofer will need to be incredibly loud because it is going into a large room...

I was talking to the shop teacher today and he seemed to want me to use particleboard, and I don't want to use particle board....BLAH

Adire recommends using Baltic Birch over MDF, and MDF over Particle.

How much more is Baltic Birch?

Heck if it is less, I'll take it..

MDF here is 20 dollars a sheet, 47" by 97"

    1/4" Oak 4x8' is 21 dollars...

I think I can build this subwoofer design with 1 sheet of MDF...

Since i am going to have alot of Oak left over, I am going to redo the Pioneers (again) with oak tops, with an oak ring around the bottom -- with a wrap around cloth, going to add more polyfill to reach the required volume the Pioneer woofer, and I will upgrade the terminals to binding post -- all of this will be done at christmas though..

Stick with MDF, BB is rare and expensive, and you wont see the veneer anyways.

    Ah...

I am going to talk with the shop teacher tomorrow and explain to him exactly what I want to do and see what he says, if he wants me to use particleboard - I may just build this outside of class as I don't want to use it on anything I plan to keep long term...

Bigger woofer = Bigger cabinet = more money

Doubling the top to apply the Oak overlay to -- much cheaper than buying a complete 3/4" oak...

The bottom will have the 1/4" oak overlay around the bottom of the cabinet...

I might just do it where the 1/4" Oak overlay goes directly on top of the first layer of MDF to save money...

The bottom platform for the woofer to fire into will be 3/4" MDF wrapped in textured black vinyl ---

I downloaded the plans, and I looked at em for about 10 minutes and with my limited drafting skills, here is what I have come up with based on the drawings. I hope they are right....
Putting the amp in the cabinet would change the internal volume some but not enough to make a huge difference. I believe Adire even says you can mount the amp inside if you want...

If you build sealed tempest then someday you'll have more space and more money to build a ported tempest. Maybe gatemplin can help me out here but a sealed tempest will probably be every bit as good (if not better) as the ported Shiva. In room response would probably be flat to at least 20hz with the Tempest.

So you're putting 3/4" mdf on the top then putting 1/4" mdf on top of that, not two 3/4" mdf then 1/4" oak, correct?

Everything else sounds/looks good. Making a sub is a fun project, enjoy it and learn from it. I'd love to make another one! My SVS driver models almost identical to the Shiva and it does a great job for me!

Good point, the Tempest is the better deal but it doesn't like small boxes. I am not sure if a 85L sealed Tempest will outperform a 85L ported Shiva. I quickly threw them into LSPcad and while the Tempest will play louder, the Shiva had an edge in extension. By how much, I dont know, it would take me a while to figure it out.

But wouldn't in room response for the Tempest dig every bit as deep as the ported Shiva?

I dont know. I had a 150L sealed Tempest and it did go pretty deep, but I have never heard a Shiva.

The document I was reading said the Shiva can do 120db with 600 watts of power - which is plenty for me. I will be putting 380 to it...

The Shiva should also hit down to 20hz with no problems.....

Right now I am well over my budget of 300...hehe, I may just build the enclosure and then order the port, amp and driver and see how it sounds....

If it works out I will finish it up....

Anymore money spent at this time is a gigantic hit to me considerig I won't even be using this subwoofer (right now). I will probally use it later though...

Chances are I will build this subwoofer at home with this years christmas money
if I don't build it, I will outsource it.... Not a whole lot in materials. 20 bucks in MDF isnt to much....

I may still build it in shop, I need to talk to the shop teacher and about it and see what he can do or what he is willing to let me do...hmm

I dunno, thanks for all the ideas - been very helpful...

Well have fun whatever you decide. You really should download a modeling program (WinISD Pro for example) and see how all the different variables interact. I spent hours doing that trying to find what I wanted. It was fun and a great learning experience!

One more thought on the Tempest... The port you have to buy for the Shiva sub costs just about the same as another sheet of MDF for the bigger cabinet... That's it I'm done with the Tempest! :D have fun, let us know how it goes!

Oh, just a side note: if you post a wanted to buy ad for an old SVS driver over at the HT forum you might just get lucky. I got mine for $50 and it models exactly like the Shiva, you could put it in the same box and get almost the same results for close to $100 less...
