Home Wireless Networking
Strong Bad

So, I'm up my brothers house this past weekend doing a rebuild on my Nephews PC. I take my laptop up there for show and tell and decide to utilize the wireless utility. I pop it open and search for wireless networks in his neighborhood. Besides his, I find about 6 others broadcasting.
Well well well, a Linksys wireless G network pops up with a good signal. No encryption detected either. Knowing the default IP address scheme, user name and password for a few brands of home networking items, I give it a whirl.
I pop open IE, type in the IP addy of the router, get a log in screen and...well well well, up pops the router interface.
NOW, if I was a mean a$$ Bast***, I could have easily disabled this individuals network pretty much locking them out completely. Sure, they could have hit the reset button on the back, but I doubt they even have a clue about that since they didn't bother to change any of the other default settings.
Last night, I decide to test out a utility I got from the internet called Netstumbler. It scans for wireless networks and gives ya all the data (encryption type, SSID, etc...) on them. YEP, found a couple of unencrypted Linksys and D-Link networks justa broadcasting away! Could have easily taken their asses down and out also.
Destroying peoples networks is not my style! I won't do it! What I do want people to realize is that these wireless routers you get for your broadband connections HAVE NO WIRELESS SECURITY ENABLED AT ALL! YOU HAVE TO ENABLE AND CONFIGURE IT!
I'm thinking about sending a mailing around the neighborhood and surrounding areas offering my Wireless Home Network Security Consulting Services for a nominal fee. I'll even show these people how I can get into their router and possibly their PC in a matter of a few minutes at most.

Wireless networks are not fool proof yet. I wouldn't touch them unless I had to.

I use macstumbler, same thing. I to have thought how easy it would be.....

You better not live near me if you lock up people's networks, I'm enjoying my free internet
But yeah that's a great point, just from my livingroom I get 6 or 7 AP's, and only a couple use WEP. And since their SSID's are Linksys, 2Wire, ect. I am sure they are only the default keys.
I would hate to think that any firggin 13 year old with a couple odd hours poking around at a hacker forum and ants in his pants could take out half my neighborhood's networks. You might be on to something by charging to lock 'em up...
And of course I would pay the deserved royalty to you....;) -

I have several tools for "Testing" wireless networks. 1 detects them, another is for breaking WEP encryption and still another for MAC address "sniffing". Do a search for "War Dog" or something similar. They're out there!
Yeah, Wireless all in all is still far from being safe with all the tools out there. Like a gun, it's what you choose to do with these tools that makes them good or bad.
Bringing someones network down is illegal and really serves no purpose in my book. Showing them how unsecure it is and charging them to secure it...now theres the ticket!

This is quite the bummer. I would like to someday go wireless but now I don't know. I was amazed when I finally installed a freeware firewall on my cable modem the kind of things that it was stopping.
When and if I do go wireless please help me out with this stuff.Make it Funky! -
I'm currently doing alot of research into wireless technology. Don't be too discouraged into going wireless. It's a cool technology!
I'm learning alot of good stuff about it and how to secure it. I know they're developing a new 802.11 standard designated as " i ". You have 802.11a, b and g currently. " i " will bring about some much needed encryption technology, among other things.
If ya need help, shoot a PM.
