Just bought Rush's latest album, after hearing a few of the songs on their Live in Rio album. Kinda liked the sound of the new stuff, so decided to give it a shot.

The first thing that hit me was the poor recording quality. Definitely overamped on the bass and i have this very annoying static throughout the whole album. I'm fairly certain it's not my system, as I tried it out in my truck with the same results. (Could someone who owns the album chime in? Does yours sound as bad?)

The music itself is not bad, but I like the live versions better. After listening to the album, I would have to say that I could've done better things with my $20. The best songs on the album are played in the Rio concert. I should revise the above, though. I didn't listen to the whole album, because of the static.....

Short and sweet review.... bottom line, I wouldn't buy it unless you need it to complete your Rush collection.
Ludicrous gibs!

Actually VAPOR TRAILS was very well recorded using a pure digital set-up at 24 bit 96 khz. It was very poorly mastered, way overly compressed and maximized. It has earned awards for being the worse sounding CD currently on the market. There are many internet sites devoted to the sound quality of VAPOR TRAILS, this is must-avoid disc.

What makes you think that of Live in Rio? It seems to be a bit on the bassy side, but you can only do so much with a live recording. The DVD rocks, IMO.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one with issues with Vapour Trails.

On a side note... I also bought Roll the Bones, and while there's none of the crackly stuff, it is actually overamped in the TREBLE. Now there's annoying.....

cant hear geddy's voice at all. granted, live recording is hard, but others have done a far better job.

In my last post here I indicated that there are a lot of internet sites devoted to the bad sound of this CD. Like I said earlier, Vapor Trails is a very well recorded disc, but it is very poorly mastered. I have heard the original DAT at a convention and the sound is smooth and clean. Read this article.
