directional bass

I'm in the process of setting up a RM6700 set with a H/K AVR330 receiver. Since the receiver has a ton of different crossovers, I'm not going to hook the system up "the polk way". But now I'm not sure about the placement. Originally I was going to place it on the left side of the room (couch on one wall, system on opposite wall). But since the RM6700's only get down to around 130hz, I'm worried the bass will be too obviously to the left. I can cram the woofer behind my speaker stands, but then I was worried about it rattling the speaker stands or TV stand. Any suggestions?? Incindently, the receiver has crossover points from 60 to 140hz if that helps.

Congrats on the new stuff Steve,
I would use the 140 Hz crossover and experiment with placement across the front of the room so that the bass sounds the best and so that it is least directional.

Thanks for your help. I think I'm just going to bring my TV out about 2" from the wall which should give me enough room behind the stereo sats (on speaker stands) to put the sub. My other question would be interference. Is there going to be a problem with the subs built-in power supply interfering with my sats or center channel? And while I'm at it, I had bought a 25' cable assuming that I was having the sub across the room, do I need to use a shorter cable to prevent timing issues?

The power supply in the sub should not interfere with the other speakers. I would buy another cable, it sounds like 6' would work. Timing is not an issue with cables, electricity travels at about the speed of light. Interference may be an issue though.

I would try both locations. With that crossover, you want to try your best to be in the front of the room to avoid localization. If however, you find that you get a more even bass response in the side location, you have a tough decision to make. Home theater is about tradeoffs, and you will need to decide which sacrifice is greater.

Hopefully you will have the best of all worlds and the front placement will also be the smoothest.

if you bought a shielded cable then you don't need to go out and buy another one.
