Help...wife wants a sectional couch

Wife wants to replace sofa with a sectional. I have a 57" widescreen tv and my RTi10's are spaced about a foot on either side of the TV. With the new sofa she wants, the arm on the left side will be right in front of the speaker. The tweeter and mid range speakers can clear the arm, but the two woofers would be aimed right at it. I know that bass is supposed to "non-drectional", but I'm afraid this will screw things up....any suggestions?

how small is the room. How far away is the end of the "new" sofa from the speaker?

The room is about 13 1/2 feet x 14 feet. The wall where the TV and speakers is only 10 1/2 feet (the other 3 feet are a hallway into the back of the house). The arm of the "new" sofa will be about 2 feet from the front of the speakers. I cant switch the TV to the other side of the room because there is no wall on one side and the other side is a triple sliding door that leads to the outside.

Simple. Just tell her if she gets the new sofa, you will be forced to get bigger speakers. Fire some made up technical terms at her to make it sound serious, like, "acoustical anomolies due to reverb levels adversly being modulated by undesirable domicile reclining devices". If you keep at her long enough with the serious sounding nonsense talk, you may be able to break her spirit.

Good luck & Godspeed. Stay strong brother.

    Good luck.

I'm here lauging my **** off at all your comments :) , but I think I am going to lose this one (I've been hearing the "you got your big TV, I want my couch" line for a while now). In all honesty would it make a big difference if the RTi10's woofers are aimed into the arm of the couch? Would it help to raise them up using something like this:
    240-746m.jpg
(This supposedly raises floor standing loudspeakers 7" off the floor and angles speaker back slightly).
Could I play around with the "toe-in" factor? Wouldn't the fact that I have a sub help alleviate with the bass?

at least you didn't have to get a damn dog!

On the raisers, I don't think that is a good idea. It is better to have the tweeter at ear level. I think if you have to get the sofa, the bass will be fine from the 10's.

Also you can try and set the 10's to small and have more of the bass come from your sub. Set your LFE to just LFE and not LFE+mains.

How about flipping the speakers upside down, have a buddy help hold the bases against the ceiling while you use some lag bolts to secure them to the ceiling....

    Naw won't work, nevermind. ;)

This is a funny thread because my wife asked me again today to buy a sectional sofa!!! I've been trying to talk her into a getting a matching couch and loveseat, not a sectional, because I'd have to move one of my RTi10's, too.

Sectionals suck. Offer to buy her something else so she'll leave you alone for a while.

you're screwed. the math just don't work.

for rti10's, 7" and toe ain't gonna get it. start thinking in terms of feet, rti8's or bookshelves.

if you had chosen rti8's it might not have been so bad because the drivers are higher. you'd lose some image and tonal balance from the port and maybe the floor reflection from the drivers. for that the 7" stands might get you back in the game.

if you want to hear what's gonna happen to your investment in speakers, throw a sofa sized pile of pillows, blankets and jackets where that sofa's gonna be and try to live with your ht and music for a few weeks.

    it ain't gonna be pretty.

I thought of this too. It could work very well actually. I wouldn't mount the bases to the ceiling though. Rubber or plastic covered cable (bike lock, clothes line or even speaker cable shold work). You'd still want to flip them over though.
