i am concidering upgrating my system and adding a pre amp. would i be best with buying 1 five channel amp, or a few diff stereo amps?
Another question is i normaly listen to my reciver now at a little over a quarter on the volume. do i realy need a pre amp and what advantages will i get from it?
any suggestions on which ones to buy would also be helpfull.

I bought an 8 channel preamp from msbtech. They said ship on the 14th and tomorrow is Tuesday:p
you already have a preamp so the answer is no. I have 2 solid state pre amps and 1 tube preamp. sure i like tubes but im focused on solid state right now:D tubes are a different story.

if you have a receiver already... you don't need a pre amp.. unless your receiver doesn't have pre amp out puts.
a pre amp is one step closer to going seperates.. seperates sound better than an all in 1 (receiver).

you can do either.. a 5 channel amp would probably be less expensive.. than buying a three channel amp then a stereo (2 ch) one.
I use three Marantz mono block amps for my front three speakers.. and a stereo Adcom amp for the rear surrounds.
good luck.PolkFest 2012, who's going>?

Tecmo04,
Before you get carried away make sure you check your receiver or the doc for it. You are looking to see that it has preamp outputs. If it doesn't then your receiver can not be used as a preamp and thus there would be no point in buying amp(s) as there would be no way to hook it or them up.
If your receiver has preamp outputs and you buy amps you will be using your receiver as if it were a preamp i.e. tuner & control center but not power amplifier(s).
As far as what one COULD spend for a five channel or other amps, you can undoubtedly find some that are used for not a lot and as someone suggested above Outlaw makes quality gear without breaking the bank. As far as the high side goes there's almost no limit.
