Hey Folks,
I am taking shop this year, and I hope I can build a subwoofer --
So I checked on PE, and found a cheap 10 inch dayton woof, and they provided cabinet dimensions...so I went with that one.
Here are all the 'parts' I am going to use...
http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=260-387 Port Tube - $1.55
http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=260-773 Rubber Feet - $2.60
http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=260-335 Grill Coth - $6.90
http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=295-485 10 Dayton Woofer - $27.25
http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=300-802 100 Watt Amp - $90.00
$130.00 (not shipped)
And below, I attached a picture of the design -
The cabinet itself will be 1.5" Thick, internal cabinet dimensions are stated...
I used the best port I could on PE, for the size they recomended -- it will work.
Yes, the port will be visibile, as I am cutting the grill off around it (I like that look)
Something fun to do...bah nah nah
I will probally use it in the Den with my Mom's Pioneer system...
I am going to get a faceplate made too - and 'burn in on it' Amprasid

forgot the picture
I dunno how much the wood will cost, it shouldnt cost to much because the school gets free wood I believe..... dunno, so the 130 isnt counting the wood...hmm
Also, the 'Oak Frame' is not the grill frame, that is a frame to hide the MDF and Oak layers...
The grill will be flush mount with the 'Oak Frame'- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -
i would like to make my own sub enclosure someday too, i took my 250 watt parts express plate amp and a 12" Dayton DVC sub and put it in a psw 505 box i got off ebay for 40.00 bucks. gives me great results, but i feel like i'm cheating.
of course, it should be noted that my woodworking skills suck, so making a box will be quite a challenge.
ah well, maybe someday
in the meantime, good luck, and post pics along the wayLiving Room 2 Channel -

I will post pics as I can, I won't start it till 2nd quarter, 8 weeks from now...
I'll have to get a disposable camera to take to school...
Amprasid 10
If I don't do that design, I will probally do a Definitive type design with Oak top and bottom caps, wrap around grill that cut off in the back.
I dunno, I will figure something out, mmhmm...- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -
Muahhaha...
I have decided to go dual...
250 watt amp
10 inch woofs wired to 8 ohms...
1/4" Oak Overlay instead of 3/4" to keep costs down...- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -

Dude, build a Tempest. The box plans are right on the Adire website. Go BIG - the price will hardly be any more than the 10" you are contemplating."What we do in life echoes in eternity"

Nah...go Tumult!
Seriously, and although you changed the design, but isn't a perfect cube a bad idea for a sub? Is this a rumor or does it actually create internal sound wave problems?
Have you considered a cylinder? -
whats tempest's website?
Shop project --
Can't be a cylinder, I have to actually construct it..... (you know what I mean)- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -
Sid, the Tempest is a 15" driver from Adire Audio Doc mentioned the plans on Adire's website
http://adireaudio.com/TextPages/AppNotesPageFrameText.htm
There are 3 vented alignments to choose from, SBB4, Adire and EBS. They are box subs and although they look simple they are very well designed. Doc is right, for the amount of time and money you are putting into the project, go for the Tempest or at least the Shiva. The shiva in SBB4 is probably equivent to your SVS and the Tempest is probably equivalent to the Plus line but Doc would know more about that than me.
You can get them from www.acoustic-visions.com they have them in stock. They also sell sub amps, ports etcGraham -

Not a problem for subs since the wavelengths they produce are way bigger than the lengths of the walls. Standing waves can be a problem for loudspeakers though.Graham -
Tempest, Tempest, Tempest. Trust me on this one. You won't be disappointed."What we do in life echoes in eternity"

Doc, just curious, but have you reviewed the Tumult specs? I've been considering it for a DIY cylinder down the road.

Well, I'm not Doc but I'll throw my two cents in. The Tumult is the highest excursion, lowest distortion sub driver other than the Parthenon. It has everything you could want in a HT sub driver, low Fs, high Sd, high Vd, the ingenious XBL^2 motor, high price, well maybe not price. If you can afford it, I wish I could, there is no reason not to use it. You can use it for downfiring cylinders, IBs, small sealed boxes, anything.Graham -
Yeah, what he said.
The Tumult was really designed to excel in fairly small sealed boxes, and it also responds exceedingly well to an LT circuit. Not that it can't be used in larger enclosures or vented, too.
It would hard to imagine running out of headroom with a Tumult in a vented application. A pair of them would be staggering (see the Acoustic Visions Everest)"What we do in life echoes in eternity"

Sid,
build some cheap **** book ends and put the money you save toward a real sub, like a sunfire TrueSub EQ. All the really beautifull people own one!!;) -
I decided on it...
I am going to do an 18" Pro Audio Subwoofer, with a 500 watt Plate amp, 1.5" thick enclosure...
I am going to use it in the den at my mom's, but also to DJ parties. I need that more than I need an HT/Music oriented subwoofer. So that is what I will do. It should be very loud if anything...lol
Tuned to 35hz...
I think I am going to use the 18 inch Dayton PE has, and the 250 watt plate amp, that will be more than enough. That should be a slamming subwoofer, and it is even tuned to 25hz...- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit.
