The upcoming Sony SACD-DR1 SACD/CD player looks like a HT receiver, doesn't it? Not appearing anytime soon at the local Best Buy.

Looks like only i.Link digital output is used for multi-channel playback. The price of the SACD-DR1, if it ever comes to the US, will be over US$11,000.00. Its price in Japan is over a million yen. You can see this player on the Japanese Sony website. Set to be unleashed in the Fall of 2004.
Must be Sony's statement SACD player....into TEAC/Esoteric territory.
As for amplification, Sony makes the matching TA-DR1 stereo integrated amp. 300 watts/channel into 4 ohms. Yes, it's a digital amp. Another US$10,000.

I wonder why no multi-channel amp??

Little too rich for my blood. If I had that kind of money to spare, maybe, but I don't so I won't...
Looks real nice... -

Danny,
I was thinking about your question. I believe that Sony knows the folks that would buy this level of gear are only interested in 2 channel reproduction, hence no multi-channel amp.

BTW, a big thanks for posting the info.Political Correctness'.........defined

F1,
My thinking is that at this level, the buyer of such a player will have something other than a Sony amp powering his/her speakers. On the other hand, the player does come with a i.Link digital output for SACD, so the owner of this SACD will need some kind of a i.Link-compatible multi-channel amp.
But hey, what's several thousand $$$ here, several thousand $$$ there.... -
The interest in Asia will be stronger than the US or Europe. Sony has been releasing much higher end equipment for many years, the likes of which never make it here, until they appear on Audiogon.
They manufacture gear in Champagne and Gold as well, but you won't often see them stateside...well, special order perhaps. The new STR series AVR's come in black....but only the silver is being marketed here at this time.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint. -
Why do the Europeans get all the good stuff? like better cars and better electronics than we do in the US? that's not cool.

Aren't we the richest nation in the world?PolkFest 2012, who's going>?

Don't forget that most companies use other countries as a test market, especially Japan. Look at all the video games that come out in Japan that never ever see it to the states. Sometimes it seems like they will buy any old crap as long as there is something to buy. There are two ways to argue with women. Both of them are wrong.
