I am getting Verizon DSL and need to get a wireless router for the 2nd computer. I have no idea how any of this works. Can you walk me through the process and recommend a router? Thanks for any advice. Jeff

Basically, the router will pretend that it is your main computer, then it will assign different numbers to your two computers. So, the outside world only sees one 'computer', which is actually the router.
So, I assume one computer will be directly wired to the router*, and the other will be wireless. On the wireless computer, you will need a wireless network card.
I will recommend D-Link.

*The router assumes the identity of this computer by borrowing its MAC address. (every network card ever made has a unique MAC address) -
Thanks for the info. I will probably check back with you all when I get back from vacation next week and start to tackle this high speed stuff.

I like Netgear and Belkin, but I'm a geek. 3Com makes good stuff too. In my experience D-Link is junk. Always has been.
802.11g has better range (and better speed) than 802.11b, and it doesn't cost much more. If you have a moderate to large sized house 802.11g is desireable for the range at least. When working with local stuff, say transfering a 50+ mb folder of pictures to another computer, the 802.11g will come in handy.
They're all pretty easy to set up. -
i have a netgear and a linksys. they both work great and took very little time to set up.
As to the argument of which to get B or G, if your not transfering large files B will be more than sufficient. Cable modems only run at a max of 5megabytes. B runs at 11 and G runs at 54. its all gravy
