I have a similar system. Polk rt 800s, cs400i, f/x 500i, and an infinity bu-120 sub. I recently upgraded my receiver from a h/k avr 75 to the denon 3802. I also was looking to spend under a grand, and got a great deal on the denon( $800 from audio king). I wanted 7 channels and looked at the denon, onkyo 898, yamaha rxv 2200, and the h/k 520. The denon and the onkyo were the ones that had 7 channels. I also listened to all of them and the yamaha and the denon sounded the cleanest with the edge going to the denon. H/K is very good, but very expensive for what you get. The h/k that compares well with the denon in sound and features would be the 8000. That costs around 2500 bucks and only has five channels. In the end the denon sounded the best and gave me the most features for a great price. Easy set-up, great bass management, 7 channels, and most importantly terrific sound made my decision final. Good Luck.

Here is link to a dealer that sells the Denon 3802 for a little shy of $800.00 ... reliableaudio and their Denon page. I was successful in acquiring the Denon 2802 from them, without a glitch.

I would go with the Onkyo TX-DS 797. You can easily find this reciever from authorized dealers at 790.00. Keep in mind the 797 is THX Certified for under 1000.

I also am upgrading from the 845 (I still hate that remote!), and plan to use the Sony as an amp for the back surround channels for the 7.1 type setup.

    Hope that helps.

I agree the Onkyo797 is awesome for the money. I have the 787 and love it. These recievers are 6 channel at 100watts but has an preout for 7 channel with an additional amp but I find the 6.1 plenty good. No exper. with Sony, I use the cs245i for my center rear surround. Seemless.
How are you planning on hooking up your rear sub.? You made the right choose to use a front and rear sub. People do not know what they are missing with that format. I read that in order to have a THX certified HT you have to have two subs. and that is why I tryed it. It feels a much needed void. :D

    Scott,
this is the advice i got on hooking up a front and rear sub.
hook your mains directly to the amp and use one of your sub-outs to the lfe in on the 350.
bi-wire the rear....run two sets of cables one to your speakers one to the sub that way the rears will recieve full freqs.
bass sound retains some directionality mainly because of room acoustics and their own enclosures for the best most natural sound all speakers should be allowed to produce whatever range they're capable of.
The cross-overs of both subs should be set as high as possible and all speakers should be set to large in the set-up menu on the amp. If bass is weak use the controls on the amp to boost it up, or switch speakers to small....starting with the center channel until you get the bass you want....this works well with broadcast tv and video tape. never use the 'bass boost' switch on the amp.
also run the subs hot... turn the sub and lfe levels of the amp about 1/4 the way up...if your range is -10 through +10, 1/4 of the way up would be....you got it -5, ,although -4or -3 will give you more room to tune downward if need be. turn the amps on the subs about 3/4 of the way up. this will give much better sound and allows the sub to really do its job. the true low freqs, which is what the sub is for really jump out .

hope this helps and kudos to the person that provided us with this info!!!!!!!!!

Sorry, I should have been more specific. The Onkyo 797 has 7.1 pre outs. I can use the two back surround preouts and connect them to two of the 5.1 inputs of the Sony. The Sony would then amp the two channels at 100 wpc. If you are looking to sub such a setup, you could use a speaker level connection like the previous post suggests. DO NOT TRY LINE LEVEL (LFE). When you use the Sony's 5.1 imputs, there is no eq or sound processing for bass management. Just amplification.

Make sure you demo your possible choices before you shell out the cash for them online or off. What sounds good to one person may not sound good to you. Try and find a place that has Denon, Onkyo, H/K, Marantz, and others you may not know about. Demo, Demo, Demo! I'm sure you will find a great receiver.

I picked up a Denon 4800 for $999 from http://www.6ave.com/product.jsp?x=AVR4800 The 4800 has been replaced by the 4802, but it is a $1999 receiver for $999. I LOVE IT. Be aware that some of those other retailers listed here by some other people ARE NOT AUTHORIZED DEALERS and Denon won't honor the warranty. 6ave is an AUTHORIZED dealer. Denon's website lists their authorized online dealers, and there are only about 6 of them.

IMO, you can't beat that Denon 4800, above, for $1000. I've got a 3801 that I'm quite happy with, but the 4800 is a big step up from that.

I've always been interested in the Yamaha RX-V1. I've heard they are replacing this model. If the price drops enough.....

DEMO! DEMO! DEMO! Compare sound for what you can as most demos won't be with similar speakers which will be most of the sound difference. Heck, I bought a receiver about 4 months ago that I'm now having a difficulty hooking my EQs up to (no Monitor)!

For that much money have you considered seperates?

You could check the dealer locator at the Marantz website, or do a search for online dealers that may or may not be authorized dealers.

Question, How is the new pro logic II for listening to music? I'm considering the Denon 3802 or the old 4800 (which someone provided a link to for $999) ..... What do I do? Craaaaaazy Eddies has the 3802 for $739! I just picked up some RT 55's, 1000, and cs400 for dirt cheap at fry's down here in So Cal. Probably will run a sub w/ it.... but don't think I need more than 5 channels........ I currently have a denon 2700 that has made me happy over the years so will stick w/ denon... thanks for your help!

Personally I'd take the higher overall quality and improved amplification of the 4800, for ~$200 more, over the DPLII in the 3802 any day. I don't see that ProLogic II offers much advantage over most any of the other processing modes for music. Maybe if you watch lots of VHS movies...

Like I said above, I'm happy with my 3801 (no PLII either), but I'd gladly trade it for the 4800.

oh yeah, your receiver will handle them. onkyo produces good clean power, you won't have any problems, just be sure not to over-drive them...
