Upgrading from 5.1 to 7.1 (maybe 9.1)

I've just purchased a Yamaha RX-V1400 to replace my 1999 Sony STR-DB 930.
When I purchased the Sony, I also bought a suite of Polk speakers which consist of:

Fronts- RT55
Center-CS400
Surrounds-f/x500
(note: these are not the"i" models).

Since I'm now going from 5.1 to 7.1, and my speakers are five years old, what Polks can work as my back surround speakers?

Also, this is for the future, what Polks can serve for the Yamaha"s front enhansement channels?

Cheers----JT

Nice set up! I have RT's myself, I like them very much.

If you don't mind used or pre owned, I would suggest anything in the RTxxx line. Your speakers have what is known as the "trilam" tweeter. If you stick with the models which also use the same tweeter, you will timbre match nicely.

As a matter of fact, there is a set of RT55's for sale in the flea market right now. As far as the front enhancements, I would guess they would be perfect, RT38's would be good for you rear surrounds.

Idon't think you'll find any of the new lines will blend as seemlessly.

    Check out Ebay and Audiogon.

Just stick with the RT or RTi series and you'll be fine. One thing to be aware of is that the RXV1400 won't play through the surround backs and front effects at the same time. You can run the front effects with 5.1 or overlay PLIIx onto a 5.1 source and use the surround backs.

I've been using my RTi6's as front effects, but just stacked on my RTi12's. Ideally they are higher and wider than the mains. Since that usually means wall-mounted, something along the lines of the RTi4's would work well.
