I would not buy RCA, personally, simply based on my current experience with this brand.

I enjoy my RCA HDTV, but had major problems almost over the warranty, which was only a year, and that didn't settle with me as a consumer. The issue was fixed, no charge, and it has ran perfectly since that time.

I know that perhaps the newer models are built better, I have no idea....really, they could be made of gold, I could care less. One bad experience, screw it, I move on....there are way too many choices to give a crap.

It looks like I will move on to my first love, Mitsubishi.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

As always, I always recommend the Hitachi 57S500. Very tweakable (huge ISF menu). Also, has lots of points for manual convergence.

Toshiba does make a good 57", but I don't recall the model.

Use my two tricks for comparing bigscreens that have the same signal in the store.

    1. Look at the detail in the darkest areas of the picture.

    2. Look at the whites. Make sure they aren't pinkish or blueish.

The two traits above tell a lot about the quality.

(Also, turn down the contrast, turn down the sharpness, and turn off black enhancement, most of these add crap to the picture which results in graniness or black crush)

    Regards,
    PolkThug

I'll agree about the RCA. Lack of current technolgy in their TV's makes the price attractive but you'll be kicking yourself later. Toshiba has always been a really good value and Hitachi is probably the technology leader in the RPTV field. My personal tastes run towards Sony but thats just me.

This is my choise all the way. I know for a fact the RCA's last but for PQ you can't beat the Tosh's. If you don't need the built in tuner get the 83 model.

Mits is still one of my top choices, even though you didn't mention them. Just shy away from the BBuy model. Tosh and Hitachi also make great sets. My advice is to set a limit on price, get out and see them for yourself and, as previosly advised, watch them in something besides torch mode (turn down the contrast, brightness, sturation, etc...). Also, watch a variety of material, don't be sold strictly on HD. Because of the lack of material, you're going to have to live with it watching some pretty crappy channels as well.

A kick **** TV; set one up recently for a friend and love the PQ.

Hitachi 57 is a kick a$$ TV but was not one of the choise's. It came in second on HomeTheters Mag on top HDTV's.

It's the HDTV I bought. Toshiba 65HX83. This model pretty much sold out after this face off. But the new model should be out and I heard it was $300 cheaper and you get even more.

I have a 46" Hitachi RPTV and it has the best picture of any projection TV I have seen to date. That is the main reason I bought it. The only issues I have noticed are when there are scenes at night, they tend to stay on the screen after the scene changes, kind of like burn in. This is my first projection TV so they all may do that. Other than that, I am continually amazed at the picture quality.

Man, that wasn't even on your list. Your killing me!!!!!!
Yes, the Hitachi 57" is a very good looking HDTV and is what made me go from HDFP for now. But the appraised 57" model is about two years old now. I'm sure the new ones look awesome.
    Now go buy it!!!!!!!!!!
