Rabbits in the yard??

While cutting my grass today all of a sudden this little 2" long thing ran by me. I thought it was a rat. I was a little startled. All of a sudden there was another running the other way and then 2 more running around. They ran off but one just hunkered down right next to the mower. I could tell it was just hoping for mercy. I got a close look at it and it was a little baby rabbit. I walked away and let it run off. Where do they live, in a hole, in the higher grass or what? Isn't it a little strange that a whole family is just wondering around without a full grown one hanging around? They sure are cute little devils. :)

    Max,

All those guys were probably happy in that hole until the mowing today. I have three "nests" on the property that I know have babies in them. The fact that one just hunkered down indicates first time out the hole. I usually take a nice fat encyclopedia and put it on top of the holes when I have to get close with the mower.

One time I just reached in the damn hole and pulled 4 out and put them in a paper bag until after I mowed over and around the hole, and then put them back in the hole! The cool part was telling my daughter to hold the bag while I did it. She had no idea she was holding a bag o' rabbits (I think Popeils sells them). When I was finished mowing the hole I told her to look in the bag. Her face lit up. She was only 6 or 7 then. Mother rabbit had no problem with me handling the babies. We watched her suckle them for a few nights after that right out the family room windows.

I had the same issue, Rabbit hole, babies were stuffed in there tighter than a Catholic schoolgirl. The parent will come back in the evening, feed, and move on during the day....after a couple weeks you will just have a hole filled with fur.

Check you lawn, and just mow around, as aforementioned by G double.

I've got some baby rabbits on my property aswell. It's funny how they just freeze when you get close. Sometimes my dog will be two feet from a little rabbit and not notice it so I guess it works. They sure are cute.

We get them from time to time out of the field behind our house. Gotta give them credit-at least they're smart enough to not come in the yard when our beagle is out there (beagles were bred for rabbit hunting for those that don't know). Drives the dog NUTS when one has been in the yard!

    That's just EVIL!!!:D

We have lots of rabbits here. All kinds of little places for litters. They are cute, but they ARE rodents. The Population around here is naturally controlled. I saw a hawk take one a week ago, man it was beautiful...
