2 amps, one set of speakers...

A friend of mine is reconfiguring his HT/audio room. He has a separate HT system and a 2-channel system. Once he changes stuff around, he'll be using his front HT speakers for 2-channel playback. I wanted to make sure I am giving him the right advice.
I came up with two options:
1. buy a Niles Audio DPS-1 amp selector
2. Get two pair of RCA cables and use two y-adapters at the amp end. Plug one set into the LR pre-outs of the receiver and the other into his pre-amp. He'll need to split the signal between systems with his subwoofer as well.
Any problems with hooking it up this way?
Thanks.
