I'm just curious if ANY of you own this DVD and what are your thoughts on it? I know it's really old, but I heard it's a superb film. Would any of you concur with this?

I loved that film, I saw it on DVD. It is old but it is a great story. The Magnificent Seven is also good and it is a newer western version of the same story.Graham

I own a few Akira Kurosawa films like:
"Seven Samurai" (considered one of the 10 best films of all time) "The Magnificent Seven" and even "A Bug's Life" are based on the "The Seven Samurai".
"The Hidden Fortress" (George Lucas based "Star Wars" from it)
"Yojimbo" (remade as "Fistful of Dollars" and "Last Man Stading")
"Sanjuro" (sequel to "Yojimbo")
"Throne of Blood" (Japanese version of MacBeth)
"Ran" (Japanese version of King Lear)
Lots of Kurosawa's films were remade into spaghetti westerns. My FAVORITE samurai actor is Toshiro Mifune, he played Lord Toranaga in the mini series "Shogun" which I also have on DVD. -
Hello Demiurge,
If you like "Seven Samurai" you might also want to try "Hidden Fortress" (see how much Star Wars owes to this one). You've got an aging samurai trying to deal with a spoiled princess with two peasants who are actually telling the story. Sound familiar? There's an amazing scene with Toshiro Mufune riding a horse holding on with only his knees while he's holding a sword over his head in both hands chasing two guys. No CGI, just an actor and a horse. Unbelievable! There's also "Ran" and "Throne of Blood" and "Rashomon" (this tells the same rape/murder story from different characters' points of view). And Micah's favorite, "Yojinbo" which became "Fist Full of Dollars". Great movies!
Take care, Ken -
Thanks for the advice. I'll try and check them all out.

"Rashomon" was remade into "The Outrage" with Edward G. Robinson, William Shatner and Paul Newman set in the 1870's , another samurai movie made into a western.

excellent movie as most Kurosawa films are

Hello,
Thanks for that information, I didn't know there was a Western made from Rashomon. I watched a documentary about Fellini and he said that the opening scene, in Rashomon, with the woodsman walking through the forest was one of the most memorable moments in movies. He said you could actually feel the sun, scattered by the tree leaves, hitting the man's shoulders. He said it was that kind of atmospheric feeing that he tried to get in his movies.
Anyone a Fellini fan?

Here's a great reference for movies that use.
