I was in a store the other day and saw car amps by Polk Audio. Are these any good? How do they compare to stuff by MTX and other companies?

The Polk Audio amps are very good. They have a great build quality and put out solid clean power. Car Audio and Electronics mag did a test drive on the 300.2 and gave it glowing reviews.

My only **** about them is that they tend to be a little pricey. If I were going to spend $500 on a 4 channel I would get an Xtant or JL Audio. The Polks are excellent amps but personally I dont consider them to be in the Xtant/JL league.

As far as MTX goes, I would probably take an MTX over the Polk simply because the MTX is way overbuilt and can take a lot of abuse. Plus it is a powerhouse and will put out a lot more grunt than its rated at, and with THD's in the .02% and SNR in the 110 db range, they make some clean power as well.

That being said, if you dont mind dropping 5 bills for a 4 channel, the Polk amp would be an excellent choice that will work fine for years to come, although you could get a little better for the cash. But thats just my opinion. ;)

If you're near a Tweeter and they have a SLAP show coming up, wait for then to buy the Polk amps. If Tweeter does the same thing they did around me, they dropped the prices pretty well on all Polk stuff.

Really? That would be cool! As it stands, I was looking at getting my new speakers from Sound Domain since they have the MM6 for $255. Id rather buy from an actual store tho so maybe theyll go down to the $250 neighborhood.

Of course Tweeter doesnt carry the MM6 only the MMC6500 so Id have to get that one instead.

SLAP? what's that? I hope they drop the prices, as the Now! Audio Video stores around here were just bought by Tweeter...

SLAP is one of the competition organizations. They have a Tweeter "tour" of sorts during this summer.

no personal experience...but ive heard good things...
id wait until they come out with a new line of amps so the price will drop...the mm6 comps used to be $399...now you can get em for $255...
i think the amps are a bit overpriced...

Don't hold your breath on a new line of amps. The amps currently aren't flying off the shelves (probably cause hardly anyone knows that Polk makes amps), so why waste money on another line if its not going to sell?

Maybe its that people dont associate Polk Audio with amps and actually most think of home theater at first. I know I always used to. When you combine that with their rather high price, people stick with the names they recognize.

I dunno, what the hell do I know?

I think the only other auth. site is Crutchfield... so good luck getting a good deal from them before the product is discontinued!

Crutchfield is usually pretty good about marking discontinued equipment down. They had the Alpine V12 F420 (110x2) marked down to $250 I believe and thats a $400 amp. They did the same with the V12 M300 (300x1) by putting it at $200 and it normally goes for $300.

They may not be stellar markdowns but theyre not bad. You just gotta keep your eyes out and catch em.
