SL3000 Tweeter Alternatives

Sorry to troll again. Last time before I simply pony up for a new exact replacement part from the Polk store, I promise.

I am trying to replace a blown SL3000 tweeter for one of my RTA-11TL speakers. I am wondering two things. First, what other speakers used the SL3000 tweeter and second, are there any other feasible alternatives to the SL3000? I see that Brian (Byteme) used part number RD0198-1 for his upgrade, but I can't seem to find it listed in the Polk store tweeter listings.

Call Helen, the parts lady at Polk, at (800) 377-7655. Tell her what speakers you have and that you're a Club Polk member. You'll get free shipping and a discount. I think the discounted price is $64 each for replacement SL3000 equivalents. The equivalents are an electrical match but are not trilaminate tweeters. You'll need to replace the tweeters in both speakers, or find someone willing to sell you one original SL3000. The originals are no longer available from Polk. There are no acceptable alternatives.

Most speakers designated as "TL" (1.2TL, 2.3TL, 3.1TL, RTA15TL and RTA11TL) used the trilaminate SL3000 tweeters.

Did you get one or two replacement tweeters?

I only got the one. When I install it and listen to the pair, I'll decide whether I want to spend another $50 for a matching new one.

Of course, if someone would like to buy a working SL3000 from me, then I could better justify changing it out.:D

    Thanks.

hey witoman - any results yet? I'm in the same boat that you were in - one bad original SL3000, one good. Did the tweeters sound different? Was the new one better or worse than the old?

The new tweeter doesn't sound much different to my ear, but what do I know...

I'm now interested in selling the working SL3000 tweeter that I have and getting a second new tweeter just so that I have a matching pair. Let me know if you would be interested in it.

can't believe I didn't think to try this myself, but thanks to darkknight's suggestion I switched the tweeters to make sure the problem was the tweeter and not something else. strangely enough, after switching them the problem seems to have gone away. also, upon looking at the tweeters right next to each other I realized I already have one of the replacement sl3000's (I had forgotten that when I bought them off the used floor at an outlet store 10 years ago, they replaced one of the tweeters for me before I took them home). So I guess I could buy a new one and get a matched pair. Not sure if it is now because I KNOW they are different, or if there's still an issue with the older tweeter, but now I can hear a difference - the newer tweeter seems to be brighter and more dynamic. Have to give it a better workout to be sure. I may end up ordering a new tweeter anyway.

Why order one when you can buy an original? PM F1Nut :)
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.
