RTI's v.s new Monitor series *A direct comparison*
I went down to circuit city and got lucky during the 1/2 off a second pair blunder they made last week. I got the Monitor 70 towers, the 40's (for rears), and the center channel.
They are replacing my RTI 6's. If your familiar with the former RTI line, then describing the sound of the monitors is an easy task for me, and I'll say it as concisely as I can. Using numerous compact disks, mp3's, movies, rap artists, rock bands, soundtracks, and orchestral scores, the new monitors 40's, in a direct comparison to my old RTI 6's, simply have MUCH MORE MIDBASS. They are also significantly more power efficient (they play much louder using the same amp, mine is an Onkyo SR501)
Other than much more midbass, they sound exactly the same to my ears as the RTI 6's. Now I know what your thinking, and the answer is yes, all this extra midbass does color the sound, and the (snare drums escpecially) midrange just don't sound as clear on the monitor 40's as they do on my RTI6's. However, with the monitors, you gain alot more overall sound that just wasn't there previously. Bass lines, kick drums, and such reach out and punch you by the gut with the monitor 40's.
Here's the good news. If you have the means, and the space, the Monitor 70's do not muddy the midrange AT-ALL (like the more compact monitor 40's do) and also give you that great midbass, plus some real BASS you can feel. For the first time, I prefer turning off the sub when listening to stereo music with the monitor 70's.
If it means anything to anyone, I'm a producer for TV music who is uses $2000 Genelec's for work. Those are of course industry standard flat frequency response speakers for recording, mixing, and mastering. I like Polks at home for a more fun, exciting sound, (flat gets old fast)
Overall, I highly reccomend the new Monitor series if your considering upgrading from your older RTI's. You'll get more volume with less power (they're more efficient), and ALOT more midbass (much more overall sound). You'll want to turn down your sub for sure, I know I had to.

i just bought the monitor 70s too. i love the sound but they are reaking havoc with my tv. is the same thing happening to u?

The Monitor 70's are supposed to be magnetically shielded, so you might call Polk or exchange for another pair.
