Things I've parted with, that I've at least thought twice about ->

KEF Cresta 2's, gave them away for $125 shipped. Mistake. Wish I still had them.

    B&W 601's - you know that story.

I guess I just have a hankerin' right now for a nice shelf speaker, get my point source on. I'm sure there's more, but thats all I have right now.

    Cheers,
    Russ

Couple things I regret letting pass.....

DQ-10's, that said though, they HAD to go due to real estate concerns

Adcom passive - again, just no use for it.

B&W 601's - killed me to part with 'em but in the end it worked out to be a killer deal

    My 1966 Pontiac GTO.

Bought it for $1000, sold it for twice that. Was my daily driver for four years, sat for several more. The guy who bought it did a total frame-off resto that took him 3.5 years to complete.

About six months ago he called me, had just listed it on ebay. The final and winning bid was...

    ...are you ready for this??

    $28,500. Ouch.

After getting laid-off from my old Aerospace gig I sold all of my gear. A rack full of Carver seperates and my first pair of SDA-2b's. Remorse? Not really. When the family is hungry and needs a roof you do what you gottta do. Do I miss it? Sometimes. I've moved on and feel that the gear I have now is far beyond the first set up.

Now my viginity is another matter.......

My 1987 Buick Regal Turbo T,3.8 intercooled Turbo charged..I wasn't driving it,we where waiting on the house to be built, which I planned on sticking it in the garage, but it sat and sat.For 3 years I only drove it maybe 100 miles. At the time, the money was more important to me.

I saw my car yesterday at it's now owners home.I really felt like knocking on the door and asking to strike a deal.

My 1979 RX-7, and then my 1988 RX-7 turbo, the two worst choices i made :( i miss them so much. the '79 i sold to get the '88 cause i wanted more power, but the '88 had more problems. After i fixed most of the problems, the engine lost compression :( i could've cried, and i should've just got a new engine for it, but instead i said i was sick of fixing it and sold it for $500... such a mistake... Now i'm in loads of debt for a 2000 Impreza RS 2.5 RS

    oh well..

    Hey Troy,
Yeah, it was a dumb move. I actually bought them from a guy who was David Bromberg's roadie. How's that for six degrees of separation? This was when I had a stereo store in D.C. and a guy calls and wants to know if anybody wants to buy some speakers. He started describing them and I asked him to bring them around. He did and I ended up buying them. They would have needed some repair work and modifications, but they sounded very good as is. One channel was out of balance with the other, but they were certainly neutral sounding. I ended up needing some money to go to Ireland and sold them to buy the tickets. The best way to have them is to use two pairs of them, side-by-side in a big room powered by Marantz tube amps.

I've always been fascinated by the KLH 9's in that it seemed like such a radical departure for KLH, not to mention that they were so highly regarded.

Everything I've ever heard or read is that the sound was nothing short of incredible and that they were every bit as good as the Quads.

    Hey Troy,
You're right, the KLH were very similar to the Quad. We sold Quad (or tried to sell Quad, at that time D.C. was not very responsive to out of the ordinary audio equipment) most people came into the store and thought they were Dahlquist speakers. We mostly sold the 404 amplifier which used "feed forward" circuitry as opposed to "feedback" design. But all of their equipment sounded great, just looked different. I remember going to a customer's house, an elderly lady who had a single Quad speaker, before stereo. She had a problem with the plastic membrane that went over the insides. We repaired her speaker and tried to convince her to go "two channel". She was from England and said she didn't like two speakers, one speaker was much better sounding, in her opinion. I hope she's still enjoying her single Quad.
The "no holds barred" approach was two pairs of the Quads held by a large framework that had a Decca ribbon tweeter placed in the middle. This is sort of what I'm thinking about, having the Deccas to the sides of the CLS II, when the Altecs are done.
    Take care, Ken
