Will I have too much bass?

I'm going to start off by listing all of the equipment I have that's waiting to be installed.

Headunit: Alpine CDA-7995

Speakers: Polk MOMO MM6 (two sets)

Subwoofers: Polk MOMO MM124 (x2)

Amplifiers: JBL Px300.4 (75Wx4 RMS)
JBL BPx1100.1 (1100Wx1 RMS @ 2OHMS)

Power and ground wire by Monster Cable

Interconnects by Tsunami

My question is this: Having only 75 watts per channel to the speakers, are the subs going to be loud enough that my mids and highs won't be able to keep up? I think it'll be fine, but I wanted some other opinions.

Nick

i think you'll be good; it's a lot a matter of personal taste, but w/ 2 mm6 sets, have at...

    Agreed.

You can always tune your gains til you get the right mix. Once youve set the mid/high gains properly simply adjust the bass gain til it blends properly with the rest and youll be fine.

i concur with mac's gains-setting idea, with one modification - set both gains to proper levels, then lower the offending one... this ensures that, in the event your mids & highs are louder than your subs, you don't push the sub amp into clipping...

Ah, yes. I didnt think of that. That is a good point tho and is cheap insurance against blowing a hole in your sub. ;)

i say no, mainly by virtue of the fact that i view it as impossible to have too much bass....

I figured it'd be ok because it really doesn't take all that much power to produce good mids and highs. 75 watts per corner should be alright.

I won't really have to worry about driving either of the amps into clipping, both of them have a status LED that lets you know if it's clipping. That way when i go to adjust the gains i can turn them until the amps are slightly clipping and back them off a bit.

Well, you could use a little more power than 75 watts. The MM6 really likes power and the more you use up to 150 will make it sound better.

If it were me, I would do without rear speakers and bi-amp the front MM6s with the 4 channel. The MM6 x-over isnt set up for it but I would run the front channels thru the x-over and to the tweets and the rear channels straight to the mid. I think this would yield the best SQ.

But since you have already shelled out the scratch for the 2nd pair of Momos, this probably isnt a practical suggestion. :D

I would but I like having the rear fill, not quite sure why but to me it just doesn't seem quite right without it.

I've done some reading and I think I'm going to try both configurations and let my ears decide. I think I'm leaning toward Bi-amping them simply because it'll double the power to the front of the car and sound alot better.

    Thats my vote!

Agein, it will sound better but mainly because of the hellacious flexibility in tuning the tweeters output as opposed to using the x-over's.

I doubt Ill ever run straight 2 channels again.

yeah, I know i'm kinda wishing i'd gotten the 75x4 us tube amp instead of the 150x2... maybe i'll get that too and find some of those (fairly rare) 6.5" quasi-subs... i think focal makes some and so do some others... rainbow used to but they stoped.... run those off of the tu-600 and put the mm6's on the tu4360....

    Morel makes a 5" sub and a 6.5"

    Bargain prices too!

The 5's MSRP is only $550 with the 6 going for a paltry $650!

I wish I could hear some Morels somewhere. I keep reading about them and they are supposed to be super smooth!

650 each? hmm that's a little outa my price range for that...

    *edit*

just saw that Digital Designs makes a 6.5" midwoofer... need to find out what the freq response is on the long throw version of that... it's only 129 each and they're supposed to be a pretty good company....
