Got Me A New Bow - Any Archers Out There?

Got the itch and bought a Mathews. Here's the breakdown:

Outback 30" draw, 80% let-off, 65 pounds
Muzzy Zero Effect rest
Winner's Choice string/cables
2 split peep
Spot Hogg Hunter Hogg-It sight
Beman Matrix 400 ACC shafts
Rocket Steelhead 100 grain mechanicals
TRU Ball Tornado release

Virtually zero recoil or wrist torque at the release. Paper tuning was easy, and it chronos at about 270 (I favor a bit more mass in the shaft over sheer velocity). The 20 yard pin is only about 4" low at 30 yards - not too bad.

I have a '99 Hoyt Raider with Intruder limbs that is perfectly tuned and runs Easton 2413 XX78 Super Slams. It shoots mint but is longer and louder and kicks quite a bit more than the Mathews. The Outback is like glass and whisper quiet too.

Any other archers out there getting ready for the upcoming season?

I have a several year old Browning 55lb compound bow. Don't use it much anymore though.

Oh man, bow hunting is the BOMB around here. I typically tag out during early archery season and then wait for the big boy during the regular season. I haven't taken a whitetail with a firearm in a few years.

I see your beer thread is still alive over at HTF and you've got some summer brews recommended.

    Check out our website: www.highfalls.com

We're coming out with an American Pale Ale and an Amber Lager very soon. I've tried both an I'm very pleased with the results.

Also check out our best local microbrewery:

    www.custombrewcrafters.com

Our head brewmaster hails from Custom Brew Crafters over in Honeoye Falls. They make some great stuff there. They can really afford to up the gravity and BU's on some of their stuff and you can sink your teeth into it. I get a few growlers from there on occasion; the raspberry summer brew (made with real berries) is just awesome.

    Don't have a bow, but I am a handgun ethusiast and have a "home-brew" AR-15 I built.

Are you good enough to shoot an apple off my head?

    Two qualifiers:

    1) At 20 yards.
    2) If my left elbow isn't sore.

    Yes - consistently.

I recommend a iron skillet in front of your face, just to be sure, though. ;)

    I've got 4 handguns:

    Sig P239 9mm
    Sig P229 .40
Ruger Super Redhawk 9.5" .44 Magnum Burris 1X
    Ruger Gov't Target 7" .22 LR

I've got one rifle in .223 Rem - Ruger M77 MKII synthetic/stainless with Harris bi-pod and a Nikon 3-10. My chuck rifle.

I got the gun itch too, here's the rundown...

    Beretta Whitewing O/U, 20ga.
    Beretta 92F Brigidier S/S
    Beretta Urika Gold 20 Ga.
    Beretta AL391 Syn. 12ga.
    Browning A-Bolt II 300 WSM
Browning A-Bolt II 7mm. Rem Mag.
    Bushmaster Varmitier 223. (sweet!)
    Taurus Tracker in .17 HMR.

    thats about it for guns....
No bow yet, but I've had my eye on a PSE at Cabelas for a month now....

Oh yeah, I got a crappy Gamo pellet gun too!

Always loved the outdoors...hunting...fishing, just being outside.
The thing to do in rural Kansas I guess.

    PETA sucks!

    Ruger KMK678G .22

Yeah - the same exact model here. Cool handgun for plinking and hunting small game.

Superbrett - very nice collection. I've got TMTL in the long gun department (several rifles and shotties).

I'm passionate about all kinds of hunting, but bow hunting for whitetail takes the cake for me. Still.....on most weekends in Sept., you'll find me in the woods sitting under a tree with my dogs and my favorite .22 rifle, hunting bushy tails. It's just a great seque into the bigger stuff later in the season.

I've got a Darton Maverick (I think) bow. I took it bow hunting one day. I brought home a nice 6-point with it.

I've got a couple of guns too.

    Thanks Doc..
I've not done much deer hunting, I've got two my whole life.
I'm more of a bird hunter...upland to be more specific.
Nothing like watching a good dog go to work.

Did anyone happend to catch any of the ESPN Great Outdoor Games?
There were some terrific archers on there...really fun to watch!

I've got a set of Desert Eagles, that is all though. Hope to get a H&K in the future, too much other things to worry about purchasing first though.

Great bow Doc. I have a McPhearson Annihilator 65# draw fully dressed using muzzy 125's. I started bow hunting 3-4yrs ago and regret not starting sooner, I just love it.
    The other things I have......

    Ruger Redhawk .44mag w/2x Pentax
    H&R .22cal pistol
    Berreta Cougar .40cal
    Colt Govt. .380cal
    American Arms .22cal
    H&R 20ga singal shot
    Remington 870 12ga
    Remington .22cal Golden 39A w/3-9x Simmons
    Remington 700 .17cal w/ 6-18x Swift
    Remington 760 30.06 w/ 2.5-10x Simmons
    Winchester 22cal w/4x Tasco
    Ruger 1022 22cal
and the worlds smallest and I mean that, a 2mm pin fire flare gun gold plated and really works great. I bought it sight unseen and when I seen it in person I laughed for an hour at how small it was and everyone I show it to has the same reaction especally when and how I have to shoot the thing.

I used to shoot recurve indoors for about 2 years (occasionally outdoors too). I used to be good but that was a year or so ago and now I've forgotten a whole lot about the sport. It was fun while it lasted but it just got pushed aside by other things (school, work etc). Maybe I'll dust off my bow and go back to the range....

I'm not an archer. However, my six year old son, Matt, did hit a bullseye at a Tiger Cub event with a mini-compound bow.

Now Dr., you need to do something about that handgun collection. This is a little taste. All of my 1911s. One is in 9mm the rest in .45.

I'm not a hunter (unless burglars and car jackers count) but I love to shoot.

Same here. I'm a major SIGnut. Too bad their semi-auto rifles are ungodly-priced when you can find one. Just have to stick with AR's for now. :^|

I do want an SSG3000 like nobody's business. That's a bolt gun! I'm slowly starting to dig 308. I love my FAL. I want to get a M1A soon as well.

  • I loved bowhunting and did it for many years. I also loved riding motorcycles. Unfortunately, my left shoulder isn't capable of archery without a lot of pain since I injured it in a motorcycle accident several years ago. I tried dropping the draw weight and getting a bow with very high let off, and I was okay while practicing, but then I found that after sitting in a tree for a few hours I couldn't draw that either. I've been seriously considering a crossbow so I can continue to hunt during the archery season.
