I must be one of those tired old men........nah, I think it's more like the 18-24 group can't afford a real 2 channel system.

Count me in too. I run my DVD movies in stereo, and they sound wonderful to me. Hell, recording engineers can't get 2-channel right, what makes you think they'll get multi-channel right?

Music - 2 Channel
Movies - Multi-Channel...
2 channel, sounds great for music -- music in multi-channel sounds funky, having the drums come from the back of the stage -- dunno bout all that...- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -
As one of those old guys I think that high resolution surround sound is great. As for not having a good stereo rig I run SRS SDA 1.2s bi-amped for my two channel system. I then added a pair of 2.3s bi-amped for the rear and a piar of CS400is for the center. This sytem is great for either two or 5.1 channel music. It also will hold its own on almost any movie. Surround is a better sounding format than 2 channel especially when you consider the high resolution factor. Open your ears folks and don't judge 5.1 music by what you hear on a home theater system. Listen to 5.1 music on a system designed for 5.1 music reproduction.

As all the music I listen to is in stereo, I usually listen to music in either 2 channel or 4 channel (with surrounds).
Movies with full surround (dolby 5.1, DTS) I usually use all 6 channels. For movies with only stereo or mono I usually use 4 or 2 channel mode.
For TV I frequently use 4 channel, occasionally I use 3 or 6 channel.
PS. I turn the big five-o this year.

I agree. I'm 46 and LOVE listening to music in 5:1. Sure
there are some gimmicky surround mixes that don't sound right but that happened with stereo too. Remember those Beatle
stereo mixes with the vocals in the right channel and the
instruments in the left? After hearing Dark side of the moon in
5:1 I never want to hear it in stereo again. Ditto I am the Walrus
from the Beatle anthologies. When 5:1 is mixed right, it's
amazing IMO.

Actually, I prefer listening to music in surround, usually all channel or Neo:6. Rock is better in 2-channel, but anything orchestral sounds better in DSP, IMO. Also, I would not dispute the fact that concert DVD's sound great in DTS (LED ZEPPELIN for instance).Current System:

I guess I must be old too because I agree with F1nut completely. I don't even own a "home theater" system. All of my stuff is two channel stereo. I may not get the surround sound effect but listing to the TV through my stereo is a damn sight better than using the speakers in the TV! Although I have to say that my Sony WEGA actually has decent sound for a TV. Two stereo speakers and a 3rd subwoofer somewhere deep inside the TV. Granted, it isn't incredibly high quality but for a TV, it's pretty good.Expert Moron Extraordinaire

No killer 2 channel set up here, not much of a music lover either, but when I do listen it is in a surround mode. Sounds good with the music I like. I have rti6's, fxi3's, and a csi3. Just thought I would give you a hard time! -

Overall, I like 2 channel for music, but do listen to Multi-Channel at times...
I think 5.1 sounds 'neat', depending on the music I'm listening to. The first thing MC I listened to was the Brand new Day album by Sting. it has some neat effects and stuff in the rear speakers, which is pretty cool. Same thing with DSOTM, it has some cool effects in the rear speakers. Some of it's kind of 'cheesy', like all the noises on 'Money', but I still kinda like it... I can do MC for stuff like that, that's mixed well and has some cool surround effects, basically for music that's MEANT to be MC.
But that's where my liking for the multi channel stuff ends... If we're talking about regular music mixed in 2 channel, then that's what it gets played on, 2 channel. I'd say about 90% of the music I listen to falls in this category and I therefore use 2 channel for that much of the music I listen to. I'm not down with using Neo:6 or PLIIx or whatever for music, it's either discrete multichannel or 2 channel only.
My friend came over and was listening to one of my Diana Krall SACDs in MC, and he was like "dude, that's cool, the guitar is coming from the left rear speaker" and I said "dude, that's cool and all, but the soundstage is in front of you, not behind you". I mean, when was the last time you went to a concert and the band members were beside you or behind you???
I have rambled once again...think my basic point is that a 2 channel setup delivers the most accurate reproductions of music that was recorded for that format (like 99% of all recordings), but 5.1 can be neat sometimes also... -

I'm 46 and I love surround sound. I feel that high-rez audio brings a new level of excitement to audio reproduction, and I further feel that surround sound makes the listening experience more engaging.
