I have a chance to purchase a pair tomorrow for $250 and know nothing about them. A quick net search didn't turn up much except ESS's web site, which is not very helpful. I don't even know the condition of the pair. The current owner claimed the original price was $1600.

For what it`s worth,I remember a friend of mine out in California had a pair of those and I thought those to be great speakers.Gotta remember that was twenty years ago tho.I dont recall any spcecs, just that they sounded great and had a metal tweeter on the top of the speaker.Anyways, the price sounds right.Have a great day. thanks for the info, Jim. Anyone else? I looked these over and besides the brown grill cloth and a couple of small dings on the mdf boxes they seem ok. The sound was hard to judge, it seemed really transparent, like I was surrounded by the music. The surrounds all looked to be in good shape. They were demo'ed in this guy's garage hooked to an underpowered 20 year old pioneer amp. I told him I might be back with him later. I stopped by Ovation's and they had a pair of 300i's (?) in their back room for $275 each.

Funny you should mention it; a friend of mine very recently brought from his basement a pair of 20 year old ESS Daytona's. We hooked them up in his garage and rocked out while downing roughly 20 beers ... not that it clouded my judgement. Anyway, I thought they sounded very nice, and I agree with you that they sounded quite transparent (perhaps the large open space had something to do with that) and generally speaking, rocked. I believe the Daytona's had an 8" woofer. That's really all I can recall from that evening.
