What is Pulse Coded Modulation?

I have a Pioneer DVD Player 757A that plays Audio-DVDs and SACDs.
In the menu I have a choice, DTS or DTS with Pulse Coded Modulation.
Also Dolby Digital or Dolby Digital with PCM.
When should I choose with PCM?
Advantages or disadvantages?

Roger, welcome. Since you likely have a hometheater setup with a receiver and speakers that process and play the regular DD and DTS 5.1 channel "bitstream" outputs, when you're using them you'll have no good reason to set PCM instead. This "downmixes" the 5.1 channel material into two channels.
