Techno/dance/house music for dummies???

I've been wanting to get into this/these types of music for a coupel of years now but I'm so clueless as to what I might or might not like that I can't even jump and I don't really want to pump cash in CD's that I'll only listen to once.
With that said, can someone point me in the right direction? I don't know any names of any artists, but the stuff I have heard that I liked the most is, for me, relaxing.
Any help is appreciated.

Thier is soooo much out thier you could be baffeled. To many styles even to even know what your taste may be.
At one time thier were the Beatles and Elvis........
It doesnt work like that anymore.
But I would start with some various artist complilations.
I was digging for some new music and I found a group called Str8Jackit on Soundclick.com and was blown away.
Oldschool rap meets metal meets sublime meets ICP. INsane Underground!! -
For a light start, you might try some Chicane, Paul van Dyk, or BT. Then you can get into some house like Armand Van Helden, anything on the Naked Music label, or for drum and bass try the Progression Sessions series by LTJ Bukem.
Sooo many different options, just depends what you are looking for in the music, and the feeling you want to get from it.LSi 9/C/FX

BT's really good, as well as Robert Miles as far as relaxing techno goes, ATB, Paul Oakenfold, Paul Van ****, are all also real nice. i also like DJ Oron, but you just gotta listen and find your style, there's so much out there when it comes to techno.

Thanks for the replies guys. I think that might give me a start.

I know that sounds crazy, but that is what, at least in my tastes, good techno does for me. I'm not a dancer, so that rules out the "get hyped up" feelings.
I know one Saturday night an alt rock station in the ATL was playing a "Paul Oakenfold Presents..." deal and that was way kewl. Put me in such an easy relaxed mood. Went right to sleep when it was over.

Where is the best place to purchase some techno CD's? Is BB or CC gonna be okay or will I have to look to the 'net or local shops? Thanks again.

There are a few good sites that you can go to to listen to this stuff. The main one that comes to mind for just some overall listening is DigitallyImported.com. I listen to that site every day I'm stuck in the office, and sometimes you'll see them with live video feeds of the DJ spinning......awesome.
I can either listen to this type of music to dance and get movin, or I can listen to it going to sleep. It's all about what part of the song you're tuned into, so I can see it either way. The same disc can be dancing, or sleeping music to me......yay.
I have to take off, but in my PM I said you could stop by any time if you wanted to sample some different stuff I have. I'd look through it, but while I was out of town my apartment flooded and I have to do some MASSIVE cleaning.comment comment comment comment. bitchy. -

how has no one mentioned paul oakenfold yet?? Not only are his cds fantastic but i just saw him live and he is even better.
-
all the genres of techno refer to the beats per minute of the song....people use the word techno to describe the electronic nature of the music, the seperate genres class the songs by how fast they are
some stores are using the term electronica instead of techno because there are so many different genres. you are just going to have to listen to stuff until you find what you like. I'd say compilation CD's would be your best bet because the cd is full of different songs.
for lots of comilations search for ministry of sound on amazon.coms music section, or steal a few cds off kazaa. the good thing about mix's is you can get the entire cd as one song.
paul oakenfold is great for trance (another stupid genre). if you like him try DJ Tiesto. his albums are very calm. Chicane (which someone mentioned before) is also pretty calm. i think the type of music you are looking for is trance, so when you are shopping around look for cd's listed as that. its one of the bigger genres of electronica so you will be able to find it.
good luck with ur search -
Thanks again for all the help. I finally got around to picking a various artists CD. I got it from BB, so I probably could have gotten something a little better, but so far so good. I got a couple of 2-disc sets of Trance stuff from Water Music Records. While the two CD's I got only have a couple of the artists y'all recommended, several other of their compilations have a strong smattering of artists y'all mentioned. I'm gonna start looking for those other CD's!

If you are up in Phoenix on a weekend that I'm in town, the offer still stands for you to stop by and listen to some of the stuff I have. I can even copy anything you like......let me know.comment comment comment comment. bitchy.

brett, ill be sending you those CD's sometime this week so you will have even more to share lol

DJ Tiesto, Sasha & Digweed, and Oakenfold are good ones to start off with.
Have you ever thought about trying out satellite radio? Its a great way to listen to different types of music and after the initial investment in the gear it costs about the same as a price of a cd / month. I know that Sirius has a few techno channels on their broadcast. -
i was big time dissapointed with the techno from XM, idk about sirius. a better way, and a free way, to listen to trance and techno is the website brett suggested. www.digitallyimported.com tons of channels of different types of music

brett,
i mailed out the 20 CD's today. thet are all in regular CDDA format except 2 discs, one has about 100 songs of techno in mp3 and the other has 3 dance mix's from DJ tiesto, i think. i have so many cd's i dont even know what i burned for you. they are coming via priority mail. my blanks dont come with cases so i put them in an envelope with cardboard in it and then put them in a PM box, so they should be very safe. there's a double of DJ Tiesto - live in amsterdam, i had an extra and didnt realize it until i had already burned another for you. i figured u could pass it along to someone because i dont know anyone here interested in techno. enjoy, i hope u like them. -
Hey hey.......thank you VERY much.
I'll check it out next weekend when I'm back in town. I'm traveling WAY too much over the next 2 months......blah.
I'll go to storage tomorrow to check to see if I have that cable you were asking about.comment comment comment comment. bitchy. -
I'm glad to see some people suggested DI. GREAT website for electronica fans. They have all kinds of internet radio stations to check out. It really depends on what kind of stuff gets you going. Now don't go judging all of electronica on retards like Darude and what-not. PLEASE don't. If you need any help with picking out a style, let me know. It seems I might be one of the only "techno" dj's (in learning, still some-what new at it) on here... What I actually spin is called Hard Progressive Trance, Hard Progressive House, Tribal House, TechHouse, Hard Trance, Breaks, NRG and occassionally some DnB (Drum n Bass)/Jungle. I'm not a fan of Ambient (aka Chill) music as it's very boring to me. I'm a HUGE fan of high energy kind of music.Never kick a fresh **** on a hot day.

I used to lightly spin a little vocal house a few years ago, but never got too much into it.
I'd like to get back into it, but spin acid houseLSi 9/C/FX

toxis you may be the only DJ but that doesnt mean you are the only person big into this type of music.
why don't u like darude? sure most of his stuff sounds the same but in a set you arent gonna throw in 4 darude songs?
u mix trance, house and drum and bass together? in the same set? -
