RTi6 vs. RTi4 as Rear Surrounds
Hey guys,
I am using the HK-630 in the 7.1 setup and have the Rti10's and 8's to be used as fronts and sides (CC prices were too good to pass up). I need to get a pair of rears and it is between the 6's and 4's. Will there be a difference between the two if they are used as rears? I have a very large area to cover on all angles. Thanks.

the 6's a very big bookshelves if room and maybe a stand are also questions I'd opt for the 4's

I have the fours and have a large room as well. I am not impressed with the fours in this room because i can hardly hear them. And yes i have the vol. all the way up on the reciever setting. If i had to do it again (and i will real soon) I personally would go with the 6's or the fxi5's as surround sound speakers. My room is 17x23 with vaulted ceilings and it is open to the upstairs game room. I have the rti8's and i am very impressed with my frontstage. I see you have the 10's and 8's. I hope you have a big room. Thats going to be a lot of sound coming from the front . Maybe you could use the 8's as surround speakers. Just a thought.

If you have or will have a sub I'd ...
Use the 8's up front,
Use the 10's in the rear,
Get FX's for the sides
If you do not have a sub and don't plan to get one then I'd swap the the 8's & 10's ...
If you don't like this idea then I'd use the 8's up front, sell/return the 10's and get FX's for the sides and 6's for the rear. -
Yes, another option for me is 8's as rears with FX's as sides. I love my 10's for music and can not part with them. My HT area is VERY large full of gaps and stairways. I do have a woofer, it's the CHT15. Could all these large speakers over stress my HK?

I must of hit the angry guy face by mistake, in no way is that dude supposed to be in there.

I would do some critical listening to the 8's .vs. the 10's for music ... The 10's will of course surpass in the bass department, but with the sub you have I would think the combination of the 8's and sub would be superior to the 10's with or without the sub. IMHO the 8's are far better in the midrange.
As far as whether or not your HK will take driving all these speakers, you can set it up and try it and see how far you need to push the volume in order to listen at the levels you like. If you've had the receiver for awhile then you should have some idea of how hot it runs. If it starts running a lot hotter or goes into protection mode then that's a pretty clear indication it's trying to do too much. If it is and your HK has preamp outputs then you can always add a 2 channel amp for the mains.
FX's will be a better choice than ANY point source for the sides ...
How large is your VERY large HT ? -
Hello Voorhess,
Just wondering what type or prices you found on the Rti's in CC. If you don't mind me asking.... Also, which CC store did you purchase them at... I am not far from you and have been hard pressed to find any Rti's or Csi's in stock. Thanks!!!
Right now I have the 8's in front, Csi3 for center and Fxi3 as surrounds...only doing 5.1 since I have limited space. I had the HK330 but decided to upgrade to the 430.. I might even jump up to the 630 . Even with no sub I am impressed with the sound.. I think I will go without a sub until I buy a house then I think I will go for the SVS -
The exact room measurements I am not sure about. I am in the process of moving in to my ole ladies place but I do have the measurements from listening position of the couch. 15-18 ft to the front, not sure as to how close everything needs to be to the rear wall yet, approx 10 feet for each side and 15 feet back (over a stairway that goes down to the front door). There is a large gap from the front left to side left, and a stairway going up between the FR and SR. Funky layout and sucks hard for HT, but a nice place none the less.
A thanks for everyone's input, you guys are the best, keep it coming! -

10's @ Middletown-$379 ea
CSi5 @ Middletown- $199
8's @ Poughkeepsie-$229 ea (not 100% on this one but in the ballpark)
I know that Poughkeepsie's store only has open box stuff left, Middletown, had 10's and 8's last time I was there.
I will be going to the store off of Rt17 in Jersey on Sat on the way to Ikea; I will check to see what they have there and will let you know.
I love the HK 630, only have had for 2 weeks with just the 10's hooked up for music but what a difference between that and my old Sony. -
Thanks for the info.... I actually bought my stuff at the store on Rt 17. They are pretty much cleared out of inventory. I grabbed the last of it about a month ago.
I just called the Middletown store an no more Csi5's. Well it was worth the shot. Thanks!!!! All they have are the 10's for $319/each -
Get the 6's. I was running RTi28's in back, and switched to RTi38's, which is the same upgrade from 4's to 6's. Big improvement. Also, if you're setting your surrounds on Large, you will notice and even bigger improvement.

Down to $319, sweet I'll get CC to price match the difference! Thanks jmzoot!!!

I'd still give some serious consideration to FXi's for the sides as opposed to buying 6's for the rears and using the 10's & 8's as you want ...
A diffused sound for the sides will definitely be better than point sources.

PS You guys aren't far north of me ... Not if you are talkin about RT 17 in Southern NY and Northern NJ ... -
I will give it some Fx's some more thought, my only concern is about the ledge behind the stairway, there is not that much extra room for towers. In front of the stairway is a no go due to the miss' things.
That seems to be the CC we are talking about, about 10 or so minutes off 87? -
I pretty much cleaned out the CC on Rt17 in Bergen by Garden State Plaza. I have never been to the one in upstate NY... but the one I called that said they had the 10's for 319 was the store in Upstate NY... I believe Poughkeepsie
