Final Selection

Well, after reading a good deal of information on the Outlaw 950/770 pre/amp combo, I've decided to go with them. I've read at least 2 dozen reviews, the specs and manuals on the home site, and looked at some higher end stuff for sale on Audiogon and E-bay. Used or no, that stuff is out of my price range. But for $2500 with shipping, the Outlaws will be mine. Thanks again to all who've steered me away from a/v receivers toward separates. Although I have little doubt, I hope the difference in sound will be noticably worth the effort. It may be awhile before I can post my results with the system. Outlaw does not offer financing, which means I'll be saving for a bit longer before I can buy it outright. :)

It seems you are unwilling to even consider used equipment which I don't quite understand ...

In any case, best of luck with your choice(s) ...

My Dad has the 950 --

    Something to know about it...

In Bypass (direct) - with the subwoofer connected via LFE cable, you have no subwoofer.

Other than that, it is built like a tank and is a solid performer by far.

Perhaps I was unclear. I am not opposed to buying used, however looking at used prices on B&K, Sunfire, NAD, etc. separates, the prices were still more than I want to spend right now (or am able to). Many of them don't come down much from new price, which still makes them between $2-4K per unit, depending on the brand. I think the only thing that came close to the price for Outlaw new was an older NAD system. I like to play it safe. New is covered by warranty, and Outlaw comes highly rated, from what I've seen. Plus, with new you can finance, and pay off over a year or two. However, I can't finance Outlaw either, so I'll keep my eyes peeled for something good on the used side of the tracks, but it will still mean waiting 6 months.

Since you want to buy new, find a local high-end audio store that finances, demo your ears off and buy what you like.

I don't use credit cards like that. I meant no interest financing. And that still doesn't solve the price issue. But thanks for the suggestions.

So what are you planning on using for interconnects? This cost needs to be figured too. The Outlaws seem to be outstanding products that deserve better than a limiting IC.

I figured I'd go with the 7 cable set Outlaw sells. Seven cables for $100, not too bad. I would expect that if they are selling it, they have confidence in the quality. Would anyone recommend something else for interconnects from pre to amp?

There is a 950 up on audiogon right now that could save you a few bills. You could always buy that now and save up to buy the 770 new, which will be the most expensive and the heart of your setup.
