Hey all,

Ive just bought a brand new MM124 12" sub on its own.. I now need to know what Im going to need to get this baby running just right..

I currently have a Infinity sub/amp in my car but thats getting sold on so I have all my wires in the boot ready for the new amp to come in HOWEVER.. this wiring kit is a '10 gauge' and after doing some research I beleive im going to need around a 4/6 gauge wiring kit fitted to be able to run the new amp im going to have to buy to run this Sub...

So what im after is any information regarding:

- What wiring kit will i need (will i need a powercap? or anything like that)

- What box to put the sub in? eventually im getting a boot build but for the time being can I use any 12" sealed box? see: http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/default.php?cPath=17_20&&received_mfg=0:73+1:22+

- and finally what amp do you suggest I get? Ive got a real tight budget of around £200 max, being from the UK everything is SO EXPENSIVE.. ive been looking on ebay for amps & i just dont know what Im looking for.. 2ohm 4ohm 800W RMS? or 500W RMS or do i want it 400W RMS?

Im totally confused.. If anyone can help me with any of the queries above I'd be very gratefull, I look forward to finally getting all the equiptment in my car.. oh and before the fun part any tips on wearing the sub in? by this does that mean not to have the volume up high? or the gain on the sub very low? or what.. What is the best way to wear a sub in properly.. and am I correct in assuming 36 hours is the correct amount of time to wear a Polk Momo sub in?

Thanks in advance

Alfy!

    you need 4awg
also, 500x1@4ohms RMS is what youre looking for
the sub needs to be in a .88ft ^3 box
anything else makes it more liable to blow
and just keep the volume down for the first 40 hours
doesnt matter if you use the volume on your radio or the gain on the amp...as long as its low

    Brillant thanks very much,

Ive done some searching on amps ive found alot but there either 400RMS or 450 or 550 or 600 but never 500W RMS like you said.. do I need to have exactly 500RMS? because i found this amp:

    http://caraudiosecurity.com/catalog/product_info.php+cPath+3_93+products_id+1100

and its 550W X 1 @ 4 Ohms Bridged RMS just 50W out and its perfectly in my price range.. is there a way I can wire it too loose that 50W?

    Thanks again,

    Okay sweet,

Ive spoken to a local shop & there providing me with

    - box
    - wiring kit
    - and amp which is the Kenwood PS621 its 550W RMS x 1 @ 4ohms bridged..
+ there gonna wire it all in for me & wire my 5" screen thats been just collecting dust in the console..

I was wondering also when you mention keeping the volume/gain of the sub low for the first 40 hours, how low are we actually talking..? to the point where little or no bass can be felt? or what... i have the Pioneer DEH-P77MP? headunit it goes up to 62 in volume.. i had my Infinity gain at 1/3 & the volume @ 35/62 and it'd occasionally cut out and that was really bassy.. should I be keeping the bass to the point where I can just barely feel it? or even lower..

Any help on that would be great because if this sub blows im gonna be in some s**t!

    Thanks,

Ive never broke in a sub in my life and have never had one blow. However that doesnt mean its not a good thing to do. Very cheap insurance I guess.

Anyway, I guess I would set the gain at about 25% and keep it there for a week or so and go easy on your bass settings on your HU and not worry about "bumpin" for that time. You wont get much bass but the sub should be broken in by then.

ok, if you had your volume low on the deck and your amp still cut out, you need to adjust your amp gain down. Just remember to keep your deck at about 3/4 sub out and high volume to set up, then listen to your sub and turn your amp gain a little below the threshold where it clips. At first, run it about half of that, adjusting it at the deck after setting it, or just run it low and set it later (use the amp gain to set it low temporarily)
