Hey, y'all,
I just got my Summer 2004 issue of Crutchfield's catalog, and the Alpine CDA-7998 is on sale for $400!!! I go their website Crutchfield's Alpine CDA-7998), and they say that they don't carry it anymore. Wouldn't the fact that they're advertising it in their current catalog sorta imply that they are carrying it?? And if so, (even if not; I might could grab it somewhere else) is that a good HU? I've always sorta looked at it as the mother ship of all HUs. It seems to be pretty awesome to me. What do you guys think about it?

Thanks!!

It may be a new item and the website hasn't been updated yet. Best thing to do is call customer service.

The sale has been on for a good while. I wouldn't be surprised if that magazine was printed up long before they sold out of the piece.

So, my question still stands: is it a good piece? Should I consider it? I'm not sure, but I MAY have access to it; I'll have to see. Would y'all recommend it over the CDA-9831?

    Thanks!

You could try bringing the price to another dealer and getting it price comp'ed... just don't mention it's out of stock at C.F.

Alright; let me clarify the point of this thread. I may indeed need help with ideas on where to get this HU at some time, but right now, I just want to know about it.

Is it a really good HU? Can you easily read the screen? Is it annoying having to wait for the screen to pop out every time you want to use it? Does anyone here have one? What do you think about it?

And, how does it compare to the CDA-9831? That's the other HU I'm considering.

    Thanks!

I have a Alpine CDA7995. Bought it from Crutchfield Open Box about 1 year ago. No Problems. Mine doesnt have all the features of the 7998. Mine only has Pre-Out. No speaker leads. SQ? Cant complain. Adjustments? Too many for me.

I always preach this. As long as youre buying from a quality manufactuer like Alpine, Kenwood, Pioneer ad the like youcan rest easy knowing you have a solid head unit that will perform very well from years to come. Other than that it mainly depends on how much you want to spend and what features you want.

Me personally, I only really require 3 sets of high volt preouts and thats about it. I dont play MP3s cause they sound like **** so I dont need that capability. I dont need a built in x-over and I dont care for time corection. But then thats just me. Decide which features you want, find the unit you think looks the best, make sure its from the big 3 (Alpine, Kenwood, Pioneer) and youll be just fine. Some may say this is an over simplified way of selecting a head unit. And they would be right. But then again Im an over simplified person! :D

hahaha!! I like things to be simple...

Thanks for all the replies, y'all!

I gave a list of audio equipment to a guy at church. His son-in-law can get this stuff at wholesale. So, I'm hoping that tomorrow he will tell me how much the stuff will cost. I asked for prices on Alpine's CDA-9831, JL Audio's 300/2, and Polk/MOMO's MM6. Not that I'm set on that equipment, I'm just wanting to know how much of a discout I'll be getting so that I'll know what caliber of gear I can get.

I certainly hope he can get Polk stuff; I feel kinda guilty hangin' 'round this forum so much and not even owning Polk anything. I can't wait to get legit!!! :D:D

    Thanks!!

Dont feel bad. I used to own a 93 Escort GT loaded with EXII speakers. EX2500 tweeters on dash, 6.5" 2 way in doors, 5*7 2 way in rear side panels. 6*9 3 way in cargo cover. I had 2 12" Ultimate Attitude subs in a ported box. 3 MTX Thunder amps. Had to have been running at least 1500 watts rms. The sub amp MTX2300x bridged running 1.5ohm load.
Also used to have a set of AMR130 for my PC. Great surround set-up. Just wished they were still available.

Well, I think we should get a pass.

We've not only owned Polk products but have done enough advertising, recommending and technical support for Polk Audio on this forum that we should be honorary employees by now! ;)

Well, as of Sunday the guy at church hadn't heard back about the prices. :( All well.

I stopped by Now Audio Video Sunday afternoon; umm, excuse me, Tweeters. They now have Polk Audio!!! :D:D First time I've ever heard Polk stuff. I like! I listened to a set of MMC6500 (I think; the woofer looked awful small, though). They sounded great!

So, right now, I'm looking at an Alpine CDA-0831/3/5, a JL Audio 300/2, comprable Polk or HiFonics amp, and Polk MMC6500 or MM6. I'm also strongly considering q-forms; depends on how much I can get 'em for.

What do y'all think about that? Which amp would ya choose? Does anyone have an Alpine with the BioLite display? Do you like it?

    Thanks!!!

id go with HiFonics...just because you can get em so cheap now
look em up on www.ikesound.com and get cardomain.com to price match it...
q-logic boxes are notorious for flexing(Bad) and leaking air(very bad)
i dont recommend them unless youre running 200 watts or less

Ill second the nixing of the Q-forms idea. They are pretty much worthless.

As far as amps, I just cant seem to get behind Hifonics. They just seem kind of cheap to me. Ive read some customer reviews that claim the amps have died and the review of the Zeus 4x in Mobile Entertainment stated that the first amp they got fried while bench testing.

If you can afford it I highly recommend the JL. Much better quality all around.

Other amps to look at are Crossfire and Orion. Those are also excellent, high end amps.

Is there any way I could put in some deadening material and some how 'seal' the q-forms? I've really grown attached to the idea.

What would be a Focal component speaker system comparable to the MMC6500 and MM6? How about a JL Audio set of components? I'm just trying to think of every kind I can, just in case this guy can get this stuff really cheap; maybe I could come out of this with Focal stuff. :D

    Thanks!!

Well Focal is my personal favorite speaker so to me Focal is to Polk as BMW is to GMC. If you can get Focals then by all means do it! They rule....even though their made by the French. :p

JL's TR and VR series are no match for the Momo but the XR can put up a fight. The Momo is more detailed but the JL has better midbass. They are both quite smooth tho.

MB Quart Reference are another speaker that is an excellent choice. They are cheaper than the XR but sound a lot better. The only thing the Momo has on the Reference is that the Momo is smoother. They are both extremely detailed with a slight edge going to the MBQ.

Diamond Audio M661 is also quite good. Its kind of a mix of the others. Not as smooth as the Momo but more detailed and probably a little more accurate.

My choice would be the Focal first, then the MB Quart and the Momo tie for second with the Diamond and the JL in a tie for third.

you might be able to fiberglass the inside of the q-form to make it more sturdy...
ive only heard of 2 HiFonics amps frying...and both admitted to it as user error...

fiberglass in the q-forms; that sounds sorta expensive
Just how much would that be? Isn't that something I'd have to do myself?

    Interesting...

If I did that, couldn't I just make the whole q-form myslef?....though, that's a bad idea 'cause I'd hafta make the mounts an' all that, too

why not do the things yourself? the q-forms will be a pain in the **** to 'repair', and it'd probably be almost as much effort 'glassing the inside of the things as just making your own - or having them made for you. the former (that would be doing it yourself) would be harder and probably cheaper, depending on how many times you messed up, while the latter just involves handing over some cash and the car for a while; how much cash is quite dependant upon who does the work.
