Leaking Box

I have two Polk DX-12 and an 2channel 800 watt amp. I built the box and there is an air leak through the terminal cups, not around them. Is this what is making my subs sound bad? CAn this damge them? I just foun the leak and have played them for about 1 month now, is it possible i already messed them up?
