Is there a way to test a tweeter?

As I was listening to my my RT400s that I recently purchased, it seemed that one tweeter was stronger than the other. This is the set of speakers that was sent to me via ups and was packaged so badly that I'm lucky that the only problem was a magnet separated from one of the tweeters. I epoxied the magnet back on and thought they were ok....but the more I listened...the more it seemed the imagining was wrong...like voices were primarily coming from one side (the side of the non-damaged tweeter). I switched the tweeter and the voices moved to the other speaker. I know the tweeter is working some because I can hear sound coming from it and the pair actually sounds very good except for this imaging issue. I guess I am asking if there is a way to determine if it is a tweeter issue...or am I hearing what I expect to hear from a damaged speaker. I can get a replacement but I hate to get one if it is not necessary. thanks

I think you've done all the testing you need to do. Buy a new tweeter.

Yep, if the sound followed the effected tweeter, then it's nothing in the crossover network or wiring of the system. Considering the tweeter was physically damaged, it's obvious that the internals are shot.

Somehow I knew that was going to be the answer. Oh well....I guess it's time to get out the credit card and call Polk CS....

Hey Shack. a guy once told me that you could test a tweet by setting your bass on the lowest setting and treble on the highest setting. This should help you a little I hope. I agree with the other guys. Break out the card!:(

Can you tell that it is fixed? I know it sounds better. It doesn't pay to try to work around problems, you may as well go ahead and bite the bullet my friend and get it over with. Glad you got it fixed.

The imaging came back nicely. They never really sounded bad, but they sound "correct" now. It cost $50 but it was probably an easier fix than dealing with the A$$ that I bought them from. I can't immagine that UPS would pay on the insurance since the packing was so bad (non-existant actually). Even with the new tweeter I still got them for less than several E-bay auctions I've seen.

Regardless of the price, the jerk should never sell if he doesn't have the courtesy (or commone sense) to package it well. Ebay is really a gamble. **** and flakes abound.

The seller could have been deaf in one ear, who knows really.....good thing is that Shack is back in action, via Polk CS.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

Glad to hear that you got your tweeter replaced. 3 days huh? I've been waiting 2 weeks for mine to be delivered.
