Back box required?

New install of mc80 into drywall have holes cut at 9-3/8”. Can I just cut away batt insulation and insert speaker or do I need a back box and why if rest of roof/ceiling is batt insulated. Thx

    A back box is recommended as it keeps insulation fibers and other in wall/ceiling stuff from getting in/on the driver(s). A box also increases bass response.
