Need suggestions for amp/pre-amp
I have tried searching this, but it is hard to find a definate answer, so I will just post it here.
I have just gotten these speakers, and need to know what a good reciever is for them.
Fronts = RTi12s
Rears = RTi4s
Center = CSi3
I have read that its best to get an amp with around 200w for the RTi12s. Should I just get a 2ch amp and hook it up to just those and use a reciever for the rest, or is it better to get a 5ch amp and run all of the speakers on it?
Thanks
Patrick

If your using it for Home Theatre I would suggest you get a surround receiver. A nice one though, 200W is a lot of power, your looking at spending at least $700.
(My first suggestion )I = NOOOOOOoooooo000b -
I would say AT LEAST 200W without a sub in the room for the 12's. You could get away with a lot less setting them to small and using a sub however...
For myself, if I were in your shoes, I would get a three channel amp or three m-blocks so that the entire front soundstage is running identical equipment if not a full 5-channel setup.
On second thought:
200W for the 3 might be a bit $$$ for the result, as well as the rears... Get a seperate amp to power the 12's and bi-amp them with your reciever (Reciever going to tweets, amp to low end) That way you'll have a similar sound all around and the power to push the bass. This is of course, just my opinion...There is no genuine justice in any scheme of feeding and coddling the loafer whose only ponderable energies are devoted wholly to reproduction. Nine-tenths of the rights he bellows for are really privileges and he does nothing to deserve them. We not only acquired a vast population of morons, we have inculcated all morons, old or young, with the doctrine that the decent and industrious people of the country are bound to support them for all time.-Menkin -
Patrick,
It would help to have a budget number to work with. What ru using it for. how loud do you listen...
There is a receiver with that kind of power, but it isn't cheap.
If you want to drive the 12's properly, I would say yes to a seperate amp.
There are alot of receivers out there. You should go out and listen to a few, for they all have their own characteristics. -
Yeah, I didn't even think to let you guys know as much as needed.
I will most likely use it for a home theater setup.
I havn't really set a budget for it. The thing is I work for Circuit City, so I can get a somewhat decent discount on the recievers, but we don't really sell any amps. I don't want to spend too much.
I was thinking of either the onkyo 801, or 901 for the pre-amp, so I guess I really just need a good recomendation on what to do for the speakers as far as an amp goes. -
Jamie...
a 200 watt amp dosnt cost 700 bucks.
The Adcom GFA-555 costs about 350 + S/H - 200 watts into 8 ohms.
There are plenty of high powered amps out there for 400 and less.
Anyways -
I would get the Adcom GFA-555 for the lows --- It will rock the RTi12 in the low end, plenty of reserve to power subs --
Then get a receiver to power the mids and highs and the rest of the system.
RTi12 - Top Post: Receiver
Bottom post: Adcom GFA-555
Use the receiver to power the rest of the system....
I must warn you, the Adcom GFA-555 is HUGE!!!
It is also a perfect sub amp though, but runs rather hot. So you gotta keep it in a well ventilated area...- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -
Sid has a good idea. You could buy a used amp, you don't have to get new. Don't limit yourself to one brand of receiver, either. Onk's are good, but then again so are NAD, Denon, and a host of others.
Since you work for CC, I would check out the best they have in whatever lines you carry. Then make an informed, personal decision.
If you bi- amp the 12's with a 200 WPC amp on the lows, you might not ever need a sub. -
The 555 makes a great amp for the lows, tons of current - 800 damping factor, yada yada - check out the manual. It can be had fairly cheap too..- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit.

Hey, I work for Circuit City as well. Here's what I'd do in your position. Get the AVR 330 from hk accomodations 380+shipping, then buy two m-blocks from outlaw audio (600 total) and just like everybody is saying, byamp the rti12's with the receiver and amps and then have the reciever run the rest of your system. That's if you want to go the new route, otherwise see what you can find refurbed or used for amplifiers, but any way you go, I think the avr330 is your best bet for price to performance. Your other option would be to buy a 901 (probably a grand with our discount, but I don't think it will be powerful enough to run the 12's.) I also just remembered that we do carry an onkyo amp on our website, so maybe a 701 (or hk 330) and the extra onkyo amp would be enough. Definitely the cheapest route is the hk with the onkyo amplifier, I can't imagine this running you more than 700 dollars, and although the hk's wattage number seem low 150 watts of good clean highcurrent power might be enough to make those 12's open up. Just my .02.
PS Circuit City management sucks eh? -
Ok, so basically I have got that there is no need to amplify the rears or center what-so-ever.
If I decide to get a power sub later on down the road, which I do intend to do, would it still be ok to have just the 12's subs amped?
I think I am definatley going to get the reciever through CC, but alot of the home-audio guys hear either like HK or Onkyo. Alot of the younger guys like the Onkyo's better and say I should go either with the 801 or the 901, but the Home Audio Manager is a HUGE HK fan, and is suggesting I go with the 630.
A problem being we don't have everything setup here were I can listen to them both through the same speakers which I have got.
Also, with the 12's amped, is there going to be a huge volume differnce between those and the rest of the speakers in my HT setup?
Sorry for all the questions. And yes CC management can suck sometimes, if not most of the times. -
Well, while looking through some of my options, I found the HK PA4000 8ch amp.
I was thinking I could bridge it, to create a 100 x 4ch amp.
I could then use one set for the 12s subs, and one set for the 12s mids and tweets.
Does this sound good, or should I be looking for something with a bit more power? I still havn't chosen a reciever yet, If I go with the PA4000 I may go ahead and get the avr630, or wait untill we start to carry the new AVR7300 and see what I can get that for.
