Muffled voice on left channel

I just pulled my father's SDA-CRS- 9127 speakers out of storage. For Christmas I was going to get them up and running for him again (he loves them). Bad news is they have been sitting in closet since the 1990s, and have been moved 2-3 times to different houses. I hooked them up to a KA791 receiver. The left channel has voices that sound like they are underwater. I swapped L/R and deduced something is wrong on the left speaker. I tested both tweeters, the left came back at 3.7 Ohms, the right came back at 2.4Ohms (even though I have no complaints on that side). I'm gonna admit I'm way out of my league on this guy's. Would it be reasonable to think it's just the tweeter (SL2000). I am trying to figure out if this part is an issue. I was a kid when they were stored in the 90s and they are fully functional. But obviously 30 years of storage even climate controlled leaves so many possibilities. This issue does happen at all volumes, and with/without the crossover cable installed. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated, thanks to all in advance

Are they the CRS+ with a single tweeter per cabinet?

Did you disconnect the tweeters before testing?

If the CRS+ version it's possible the polyswitch is bad. It's located on the crossover and will be either blue or mustard colored. You can twist the leads together to temporarily bypass it.

BTW, that Kenwood is an integrated amplifier not a receiver.

Yes they are the CRS+ with a single tweeter. I didn't disconnect the tweeters. I didn't think about it, when I get home I will so that.

Yeah that was it. Left reading is 0 Ohms, right side of 7.2 Ohms. So it seems like it's going to be a simple tweeter swap thankfully. Getting out a soldering kit that I haven't used in 20 years myself seemed a bit out of my pay grade.

OK, since you don't seem too interested in soldering anything replace both SL2000 tweeters with the far superior RD0194-1, which you can buy from Polk.

To clarify what F1 is saying, you shouldn't need to solder if you are replacing the original tweeters with replacements. They are connected with a pair of click on spades. For the best sound, it is also recommended to replace both tweeters with a newer design that has a smoother sound, the RD-0194-1. You can purchase a pair from this reliable seller:
    https://reconingspeakers.com/product/polk-sl1000-sl2000-tweeter/
A pair will run about $124 plus tax. Note: in your case, the screw holes should line up with the originals.
  • Thank you gents. I figure staying "in my lane" will keep me out of trouble. I will grab a pair of RD0194-1 tweeters and just throw this in. Sometimes discretion is the better part of valor. I'm thrilled this forum exists, and the vast majority of you gents have been very kind. I appreciate all the responses and the time you took to respond.
