Side of the road find RT1000i

Picked up these on the side of the road. Hooked them up and figured out why. 1 amp dead and the other is buzzing. Decided to start with the buzzing one and the 4700uf filter caps seem to be bad. I don't have ESR meter yet but Fluke is not getting consistent reading on either. Measuring dc output I've got 25v on one side and 20v on the other with no loading. I've bought some cheap 35v 4700uf caps on Amazon for fast delivery and will install then report back. I'd not be surprised if this is the issue, installed ones are 25v and rail voltage is 25v so no margin. Internet searches seem to show some people had similar issue with filter caps so who knows. Not got much to lose right now, only invested $7 so far. Vinyl on face of speakers has shrunk and pulled away from wood. I'll have to source replacement for that if I successfully repair the amps. Also it looks like the RCA inputs might have fried, but possibly thats just discoloration (see pic).7guihfq8veqw.jpg

Woh. What would cause damage on RCAs like that?

wondering if he hooked rca's up while the binding post jumpers were installed and powered but I still wouldn't think speaker level voltage would toast it like that.

I wasn't really paying attention before at first glance, and see that those RCA jacks are actually SUB In and Out. Is that Out supposed to go to the In on the other speaker?

If L R output signal from a component were plugged into the In / Out? Wrong direction for one of them.

Could just be the result of a bad failure that allowed high current to go where it wasn't intended. 50/50 chance of that or misguided plugging. Not sure what type of amps those speakers had, but chances are, the amps aren't with fixing. Can those speakers be reconfigured to just run off amplified speaker output? Given they were curbside pickups, there are quite a few diy options to consider.

My time with a pair when they were new tells me there are valid reasons besides the cooked electronics why they were beside the road.

I don't have high expectations for the overall quality of speaker, honestly I've already got too many and these wouldn't displace any in use. The thrill for me is to figure out if I can fix them. What is the new term for that upcycling?
I'm not so sure that the dark color in picture isn't discoloration. I don't see any warping in the plastic housing itself. I would think if it was hot enough to blacken the epoxy it would distort the plastic too.
I also like to document projects I have completed to help build a knowledge base for people in the future with similar issues.

Well there is some very high temp plastics or polymers in use. Think Glock....

Updates: the 2 new filter caps seemed to fix 1 amp. I now have +/-25vdc on the rails and my +/- 15vdc regulators are working. Plugged it in and voila. Now I was only listening to the bass because the mid/tweet were removed from cabinet but it seemed like I was able to drive it to distortion at a pretty low level, maybe not filtering out high frequencies well. I'll wait to make final judgement until completely reassembled. That brings the bad news. When reinstalling the mid/tweet I dropped the mid and bent woofer frame also the adhesive on magnet broke loose. So I need a replacement MW7200. Some out there on ebay...a little pricey though. Any forum members want to part with one or do other model #'s work? Some similar looking ones are cheaper on auction site but not sure of the differences, just see the cones are also blue.
More good news though. I pulled and bench tested the other dead amp and it looks like same issue. No +/- 25vdc on rails, filter caps are bad. I do see some discoloration near the 15vdc regulators and possibly at the 1875 amp

I honestly wouldn't go to knee deep in those unless you just really want a project

Put them on the side of the road where found is the best option.

    Orrrrr...
With April 1 approaching, you could take them back to the guy's house, put them on his porch with a note that says you fixed them and they sound so awesome your conscience wouldn't let you keep them?

I just can't help myself. A thousand projects and I ignore them all to play with electronics... Anyways, it took a few days to get some reliable caps from Mouser and I installed them this morning. I've got my 25vdc on rails now but the 15vdc regulators are both bad. Only $1.50 each but another 4-5 days and shipping costs....sheesh. Now I'm hooked though. ajwyml39xwx8.png
