looking for new printer options

My HP 8600 printer threw up the dastardly "printer failure" code.
I'm looking for something that will scan and print, no need for a fax option that the 8600 had. Ink replacement that is reasonable is a plus. I'm aware some of the printers inks can be very pricey.
What's out there to consider?
My main use is scanning documents for insurance and printing tax records. There will be long periods of non-use, I'm aware some of the companies inks will dry out and are useless after a long inactive period, so that is something I need to avoid.

I recommend Epson. HP printers aren't what they used to be.

How much do you truly print?

My local fedex prints stuff so cheap I've never found the desire to own a printer but we have considered one as my daughter is getting more involved with school. Look forward to seeing what others say as my circumstances would be similar

I own a thermal for labels and such which is a no Brainerd as it doesnt use ink. We have printed 1500 labels over the past 3 years... Zero ink!

Good topic and excellent timing. We have an older Canon that needs to be replaced.

I scan stuff to health insurance more than print. I'm not about to take a thumb drive or sensitive papers to FedEx to print. Out of the question.

My HP was about 10 yrs old. It doesn't owe me a dime. The ink wasn't exactly cheap.

I have a Brother laser all in one that has worked flawlessly for years. Toner carts last much longer than ink and are cheaper in the long run IMO...

Don't remember off hand, probably less than $300.

Like Ken said, something like my link below, as long as you do not need color, is a no brainer.

The toner they give you with it has a short lifespan. New toners around $60-80, but they last me years. So much cheaper than an inkjet, and prints faster too. You will wonder why you owned an inkjet.

Our local Best Buy has a color laser printer for not much more compared to the black only on the website. Tomorrow I'll hit both BB and the local office supply store to see what my options are.

If you don't print much color a monochrome is a better choice. Pita with multiple carts in a color laser, especially if most of what you is scanning docs. IMHO.

Needed a Inkjet printer a couple of years ago made the mistake of choosing an HP with thier worthless instant ink program. They charge you a monthly fee off of predicted amount of sheets you print out. I have ran out of Ink a couple of times and have had to call them begging for my ink. They say you have'nt used all the ink or printed the amount of pages you are paying under the plan I chose.

I always have to get a little hostile with them and they end up sending the ink anyway. Print quality nowhere near as good as the Epson it replaced. I cant wait for the HP to quit working so I can get another Epson.

Beware, color laser is great, but the replacement toner will cost you 4 times as much as a monochrome printer. Price it out before you commit.
For that reason, I've had monochrome lasted for the last 25+ years. Inkjet hates sitting idle so I dumped that around 2003.
For color, I send stuff to FedEx Kinkos, or hand color if it's simple. (Or occasionally I'll print it at work 😬)
I've had a Canon Multipurpose (mf445dw) since 2020 and it's been great. I had two different Brother units before that one and they worked fine as well. Toner is a bit pricy for genuine Conon replacements, but they replace the fuser with each cartridge so that means more consistent prints as it ages.

Keep in mind that companies play a loss game on new printers. Their new price is often priced less than a replacement toner cartridge.

Well I went with the Epson WF-3820. I couldn't beat the $70 price. The Epson ink is very reasonable for both color and black. With the amount I'll print in a year the standard (non XL) was $50 for the pair, as in the 3 color and a black. The old HP was $80 for the black and $130 for the color.
I looked at a few of the laser printers but to get one that scans to the puter was $100 more and the toner was $140. I'd have to do a lot more printing than I do to justify the cost.

Just make sure to use it a few times a week and you shouldn't have any issues. Let it sit for a month with no prints and that's where the headaches start.

That's been my experience with Epson. And every time it's turned off or on, even after 5 minutes it will run a cleaning, and waste ink. Still never had one last.

No such issues with my Canons, and generic ink is dirt cheap, like 3 kits for $15. No issues after 7 years of sparse use.

No such issues with my Epson WF-3540 and it will not automatically run a head cleaning if turned off/on. I tested the print quality of like/kind HP, Canon and Epson units when I was shopping for one. The Epson won hands down.

Cleaning cycle? So glad I haven't had to hear one of those for the last 20 years. I'll gladly give up color for that peace.

I have an Epson ET-3830 I bought 3-4 years ago. I did a lot of printing with it when I was President of our HOA. I hate to think how much I would have spent on ink cartridges with another printer. They don't use cartridges.
I have had no problems with it, in fact it is the best printer I have every had.

During the chip shortage, Canon announced that their printers wouldn't check for authenticity of carts used.

For my clients who mostly (now) have Canon, I'm able to find quality third party inkjet carts for under $3 each and laser carts for under $10 each. Do have to be particular about the seller to get quality though...

Unless you go with a workgroup-grade model like the HP OfficeJet Pro series, expect to replace an inkjet printer every 3-5 years. But for the cost of even a third party set of HP OfficeJet Pro cartridges, you could buy another new upscale Canon inkjet.

Sorry I'm weighing in a month late, but maybe that'll still help someone.
Expect that there will be bumps in the road. Choose to not let them rattle you.

No idea what the issue with printer’s are nowadays but….

We purchased a Canon bubble jet 1992?
Did everything including color copy & fax.
What a pleasure that thing was, expensive back in the day but was worth every penny.

Now we have an inexpensive hp that just prints, cost the wife less than a hunge and f does it suck!
    Always has issues….

What happened to personal printers over the decades?

Companies like HP are in deep trouble. Printers and supplies are the last big reoccurring
Consumer need. So ink is the cash cow. That's why the are forcing you to buy their stuff.
They deserve to go under. Yes, I have a personal grudge against them. But to see what
they are doing to customers makes me sick. I have a stand alone scanner and use a
Brother laser printer. The toner has lasted me 8 years. I think I paid about $100 for it.

I’m seriously starting to have some doubts that they’ve actually stopped caring about us/their customers.
