Speakons

Since this subfourm's description includes "making the right connections", I'm putting this here.
A couple-three of us A/V nerds at church (including our pastor, I might add) are redoing the sound system in the sanctuary. We installed new loudspeakers yesterday (no mean feat, but fortunately one of us had scaffolding at home, which he kindly went and got when we saw that working with ladders was putting us a little too close to the everlasting... :#).
I mention this only because, for the convenience of all involved, and given the connection options of both the loudspeakers and the amplifiers, we went with Speakons. Now, I knew of Speakons, but I'd never really worked with them before. I ordered a bunch of two-pole Speakon connectors from Markertek (my own preferred vendor for such stuff - not cheap but phenomenal service and support IME), figuring "how hard could it be?"
Well -- other than the fact that the precise assembly's arcane without RTFMing (so to speak), they are incredibly easy to install. They are also incredibly easy to use.
I am totally sold on these for PA/sound reinforcement applications! They're not even expensive! Bonus!

At any rate, not particularly interesting, I know, especially for this crowd -- but I was excited and wanted to share my joy.

I'll share some piccies anon, when everything's cleaned up. Still some residual work to do this week.

    Imo

Speak on, power on, bnc and xlr should be the ONLY connections on the market

Binding post, rca, iec, etc is antiquated and junk

Cool story Mark. Your posts make me need the option for multiple reactions. I CTMs at the "too close to the everlasting" bit.

One issue about XLR's, Speakon's, BNC and the like that you may not have thought about -

Yes, they are a superior connection IMO. They lock into place and provide a very secure connection. That part is awesome. Locking RCA's can have just as much of a grip though.

What isn't awesome - Let's say that you are walking behind a rack and snag a PC. Would you rather the PC break the connection, with the PC sliding out....or have the component that it is hooked to slide out and fall on the floor or another piece of kit?

There are attributes, as well as deficiencies with seemingly everything in audio. This scenario, is one example of a deficiency.

I honestly don't think that is a big concern as alot of components are hard wired which is essentially the same thing.

Now in applications where something is out in the open that's a concern for sure.

Bnc is better than rca for a variety of reasons other than the locking feature

Tom, are you turning British on us, or have you been watching that Special Forces show on Fox? Piece of kit?

Nope. 100% American. But I do dabble in forum slang.

Other than the spec ohm rating and twist on lock, what else is there?

Oh, well then, in your case....you wouldn't want the rack to tip over, would ya'? o:)

I was thinking the same thing, and how many of us can?
