When huge piece of ice/frozen snow hits you at 65+ mph

Isn't there a law that vehicles/trailers must clear their vehicles of ice/snow to avoid what happened to me yesterday? I was on the interstate getting ready to pass an 18 wheeler when I say a large piece fly off the trailer roof. I thought it would fly over me but a large chunk of it fell off and hit my windshield. Thank God for safety glass! I'm a decent driver and stayed calm in the moment, but my adrenaline kicked in and had me nervous for a few hours after the fact.
Not sure you can tell by the photo, but the glass is pushed in over an inch and the rear view mirror is pointing up at the headliner. Pieces of glass all over the passenger seat and dash. Got the trailer# and called the trucking company(big firm), supposed to have somebody contact me within 48 hours, got an appt. for today to replace glass.

That's scary as hell! I don't think there are any laws for clearing the trailer, but the company is responsible for anything that falls off the truck. There really isn't an easy way to clear snow/ice off the top. I saw a video recently with a mechanical sweeper that the trucks drive under to clear the roof, but I think those are pretty rare and I don't know how they would work for ice buildup.
Hopefully the trucking firm doesn't blow you off. If they do, let your insurance company fight with them. They will sue if needed.

Glad to hear you didn't get hurt. Same thing happened to me several years ago. Icy snow flew off the roof of a cargo trailer and hit my truck hood and roof hard enough to cause some damage. After my heart stopped racing I got close enough to get the license number and the 1-800 number. I called and the dispatcher said the trucker denied seeing anything fly off the roof. So I asked if he saw me pull beside him and give him the finger. Yes he did see that. I also mentioned they may want to clean the bridge off where the snow flew off before someone spins out and they get a lawsuit. That got his attention. A few days later an insurance adjuster came out to inspect my truck and gave a fair price for the damage. Yes a trucker is responsible for snow flying off and causing damage and they know it.

Trucking company contacted me today and will pay for any out of pocket $$. They should pay for my stress too!
Safelite would come to my home but I made an appt to be at their shop due to weather, etc. Plus I think the repair would be better if done in a warm garage. No police report was needed, at least not yet.Yep, my name really is Bob.

Pay for out of pocket? So they want you to submit an insurance claim?

Glad you're okay man. Yes, clearing vehicles would be the way to go. I remember seeing residents with POV's making little peep holes in the driver/passenger and rear windows....lazy dangerous phuchs people. I've even seen snow fly up from their hoods onto their windshields and then get swervy for a minute......WA drivers used to piss me off so bad....now Texas drivers piss me off.......what is WRONG with me.......Source: BRP Panasonic UB9000, CDP Emotiva ERC3 - Display: LG OLED EVO 83 C3 - Pre/Pro: Marantz 8802A - Amplification: Emotiva XPA-DR3, XPA-2 x 2, XPA-6, Speakers, Mains/2ch-Focal Kanta No2's, C-LSiM706, S-702F/X, RS-RTiA9's, WS-RTiA9's, FH-RTiA3's, Subs - Epik Empire x 2

Bob, I'm glad you're alright.
I think you should get more than out of pocket too.
Most people just listen to music and watch movies. I EXPERIENCE them. -
Glad you're okay. That is scary, especially on an interstate. I had Safelite replace a windshield in their local shop about ten years ago. I thought they did an excellent job.

Glad you are not injured. Lucky for sure.

That’s crazy. Glad you’re ok and glad they seem to be agreeable to taking care of the damage caused. Should they pay for stress? Maybe, but I’d certainly be happy if they take care of the damage without making you fight them.Things work out best for those who make the best of the way things work out.-John Wooden

Yep. If I wasn't so honest I would get an invoice from Safelite and send it to them for payment, then submit it to the ins. co.Yep, my name really is Bob.

Bob, does your vehicle have a factory windshield?
I hate Safelite. The guys who worked on my vehicle were sloppy, but it was hot as H that day, and those guys were having a rough time, and it was very busy. Not up to my standard, and was not satisfied. Sealant on my headliner, and substandard glass.
Third party replacement glass can be distorted. Shows as waviness. It's well documented out there. I knew this going in, but insurance wouldn't allow me to pay the difference for factory replacement. Figure they have agreements with Safelite.

But, at least you're not dead. Or maimed.

I'm not sure where and when this happened BUT your insurance company cannot make you use a particular company, nor can they refuse OEM glass. At least they cannot here in Illinois. -
I think it had something to do with glass damage coverage. I don't recall the specifics, but two reps told me the same thing.
Obviously depends on the policy, but it wasn't hard to turn up cases of people having dealt with the same thing. Common complaint, and I didn't have time at the time to mess around on it past making a few calls. It's a thing.

Drove home from NYC this past weekend. Ice bombs everywhere. Did the lane change, brake hard game all the way. Luckily avoided damage. Cleaned off my own vehicle before heading home. Didn't want to be that guy. Too bad others are idiots. Glad you avoided injury. That **** is no joke.

To clarify, nobody made me file an insurance claim. Went that route as it was the quickest solution and we needed that vehicle back asap as our 1/4 mi. long drive is a lot of ice.
Nothing out of pocket and hoping the next insurance bill isn't outa sight.
I was nervous driving it to their shop, with every bump in the road a few more pieces fell onto the dash. I saw a few more snow fly off vehicles on my drive to Safelite, I think I'll have a mild case of PTSD every time I see that. Glass looks good to me and they did a good job of cleaning the interior too.
Happy to say records will be staying here safe & sound (usually good at that too).Yep, my name really is Bob.

It should be comprehensive and not affect your rate, but it will show up as a claim (for four years, I think) should you go out and shop your coverage. I ran into that a few years ago. Should be the only downside of turning it in, though.

I was just talking to the kids about why you should clean off your vehicle in the snow before driving this morning on the way to school in the snow. I'm going to show them your pictures.
Also, on the thing about clearing trucks, when I worked at the diesel shop, we had a bar over the yard gate. The bar could be raised and lowered. The bar had a stiff bristle brush and an HDPE scraper blade on it. During snow storms, the trash trucks leaving would be able to scrape the top off. The throwers would get out, put the bar at the dump body height and then the driver would drive through the gate scraping the truck top as it went through. The throwers would push the snow out of the way with a couple of shovels that were left near by and throw a couple handfuls of ice melt.
We never had a problem with snow blowing off the trucks. The boss was very litigation adverse.
But I know that some weigh stations on the interstates and turnpike in NJ, PA and NY have scraper bars that will raise and lower depending on trailer height using radar or lasers or something. When the truck leaves the weigh station, the snow scrapes off. I hadn't seen them on every weigh station and I guess they were testing them out but a long haul driver I know who lives out in Missouri told me he's seen them in a few places and many were pilot programs but they've been successful so lots of northern states are looking to put them in place. He said they are all over Canada. Same idea, bar on poles, truck drives under, poles raise and lower automatically to truck height and knock the snow/ice off. He said in Canada they have grated troughs under the bars that are heated for the snow to fall in to and melt into runoff gullies.Expert Moron Extraordinaire

Major trucking firms and interstate highways should have a system to remove stuff that could kill somebody. I feel very lucky to come out of this with not a scratch on me or the CRV.
Told the guy at Safelite what happened, he said I was the 2nd job they had that day with the same story to tell.Yep, my name really is Bob.

Consider installing a front and rear facing dashcam. VIOFO makes a good one.

What system could our highway/interstate/state roads implement to prevent this?

Glad to hear you are safe. I don't know about your policy but down here in SC and with State Farm, we are allowed one windshield replacement per year, with no deductible expenditure and no increase on your premium. I have had my truck for over 20 years now, and I have had the windshield replaced 3 or 4 times during this time. Zero out of pocket costs and the premium never increased (other than normal increases).

Been told it's the same here, time will tell. Supposed to get about 5" of snow today, fortunately it's expected to warn up tomorrow so should be safer driving.Yep, my name really is Bob.
