I think this is the first time I've posted in this forum and really have no idea about HT and not planning on getting into it just yet...waiting til I get a house and a nice big tv first:)
but for now...this is what i have
a crappy tv
this particular crappy tv has 2 places for RCAs, a yellow video and a white audio
it also has a place for an antenna in the back
i also have a crappy dvd player
this particular crappy DVD player has a bunch of places for rca's
one yellow video
under that is some type of connection that looks like a "pre-usb port" mouse would be hooked up too...says 's-video'
red left audio, white right video, orange one that says coaxial, green one that says 'y', blue that says 'pb', and another red that says 'pr', along with another weird looking connection that says optical
the last piece of equipment i have is an aiwa shelf system
not exactly great...
but is it possible for me to hook up the tv and dvd to the shelf system?
it has a video/aux mode and has 1 red and 1 white RCA input in the back
so...can i do it?
or am i stuck with the **** tv speakers until i quit being stingy and actually buy some nice equipment?
thanks

You can get audio for your DVD player to your Aiwa using the red and white RCAs. For video you are stuck with composite (yellow RCA). Unless you have and old VCR or your TV has audio outputs (doesn't look like it) you are stuck with listening to the TV through the mono speaker.Graham

Exalted,
FYI: As you seem to be very new to A/V terminology, I'll start you out a bit. The typical older VCR has two kinds of audio/video hookups, either a cable in from the wall, and out to the tv, as in basic tv cable. They also have what is known as Composite Video, which is the Yellow, Red and White. Yellow is for video, Red and White is for audio. The R/W is the basic audio output on any VCR, DVD, or Receiver. Composite Video is the lowest quality video picture. S-Video, is made up of R/W also for audio, but a black cable with a rounded plug that has little "teeth" that fit into holes in the input on a TV, DVD, VCR. Component Video is the highest quality (shy of High Definition DVI cables), and is made up of the Green (Y), Blue (Pb) and Red (Pr) RCA cables that you mentioned. All three are only for video, as R/W RCA cables are still needed for audio. Typically, a Digital Coaxial cable, or Optical Cable, will be used from a DVD player to a stereo receiver. Coax or Optical are the only way to process Dolby Digital or DTS surround modes. Red and White will only get you stereo or Pro Logic (a mock surround mode) output. That is a basic beginning to these forms of audio/video output/input. I would strongly advise you learning a good deal more about these different modes before investing further in HT equipment.
