So you buy that 5 quart jug of mobile 1 synthetic for $28. Then have to shell
Out $9 for the extra quart or two you need. That's at Walmart. At autozone
It's $12 for a quart. And all cars seem to need that extra half quart.
The Camry holds 6.4. The wife's car holds 4.2 and of course it's a different
Viscosity so you really shouldn't use the extra to fill the camry, or the
Other way around either. I end up saving a bunch of partial quarts.
I guess that the price you pay for not converting to metric.
The stores know that and rob you on those single quarts.
Still better than going to those nasty quick change places.
Have you seen those special made mini filters some of them use?
Cheap and most likely subpar.

I don't let strangers touch my car. Dealerships are crooks. My son worked at some
when he was younger. The stories he told. Sometimes they wouldn't even change
the oil, just charge for it. And that was at a Lexus dealer!
I look things over while I'm doing the work. I've been changing oil for almost
60 years. I started doing maintenance while growing up on a farm.

I've been absolutely blown away by this Toyota dealerships service department.
Absolutely zero complaints and I'm a high mileage driver. Oil changes every 40ish days.
Not all dealerships fall into that category. Also their pricing is in line with a small mom and pop mechanic I had been using.- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -
I’m fortunate to have a Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep/Ram dealer like that. 100% confidence in their service and zero problems over 20 years.
Ageee not all dealers are the same, though. And probably not every one of their customers has had the same experience I have.

I've found if you can hold a conversation with the service tech and show understanding it helps.
It's unfortunate that there are service departments who take advantage of folks but I guess that's just the human condition.

Oil. Buy 2-3 5qt's.You will use it...Toyota says change oil at EVERY 10,000 miles.. I did 1st one at 1000 miles. Then at 5000 then 10,000 miles &every 5000 after.. So Toyota dealerships say every 10,000 miles SO your motor gets clogged up at 120,000 miles & destroys your motor. If you own a Toyota do yourself a favor & watch on YouTube Car-Care-Nut he is the man. Service & maintain your own car OR find a service station that KNOWS what they are doing - pay the man.... My last new vehicle had a issue. I went into a dealership (Emerson's Toyota in Auburn Maine) & I told them the oil control valve is stuck & needs to be replaced. I waited 1.5 hours & they pulled it out & said make a appt. WHAT. I went down the road & bought a oil control valve for 100.00 & I grabbed a 10mm wrench & put a aftermarket OCV on it in 3 mins. I paid dealership 80.00 & I complained as I left because they did not have one.. I asked them to take one off a vehicle in the lot. Nope.. Needless to say. I got home. Called Topsham Toyota & ordered a OEM & when it came in i installed a OEM ocv in truck. I hate dealerships. I only use OEM parts,period....

Mobile 1 is good oil for Toyota's. I buy all my filters from dealership. I do all my differentials at every 30,000 miles. Radiator & transmission flushes @ 50,000 miles. I use Toyota fluids only. There are chemicals that are harmful to gaskets & only to save 5 bucks isn't worth the risk
Antifreeze. I about shxx. yes expensive. But 50,000 miles is approaching

I have a trusted mechanic that changes mine. The days of me changing my own oil has been over now for several years. $68.81for an oil change and tire rotation while I waited this Monday. Also topped off the fluids and told me my 5 year old battery still has 90% life left. Plus every 5th change is free for repeat customers.
I'm certainly not the sharpest knife in the drawer but to me this makes it a no-brainer compared to me gathering up the materials and tools, laying under the car in the cold weather and then dealing with the mess. Even moreso for my truck which requires the removal of the front wheel for an oil and filter change. -
My favorite dealership quote from my son . You don't get paid to do diagnostics,
You get paid to fix things. That was his boss telling him to throw some parts at
the problem and get it out the door.
The local dealerships in Dallas were bad. They don't seem much better up here in
Tennessee. I looked at a used Camry at Toyota.. they quoted me a price. I saw the
Online before coming in. The price was $1k higher than the advertised price. I walked
Out and bought a better one from a small independent place for a cheaper price.
Running over 5k between oil changes is foolish unless you do a ton of highway driving.
All my driving is pretty much around the corner stuff.

I take my GTI to the dealer. I don't put a lot of miles per year on her. I bought a new GTI in May of 2023 and I just turned 7K miles. I change the oil once a year regardless of miles. It has gotten pricey at the dealer. $130 for full synthetic, but it's part of the cost of ownership.
On the GTI the oil filter is mounted on top in front. So, if I had an oil extractor I'd never have to put the car on stands and crawl around underneath.
Still, $130 once a year is worth it to me. I would NEVER take it to a quick lube place. Too many horror stories and I don't trust them to do the job correctly.

Back when i sold cars for a few years a lady came in with a car on a flatbed for trade in... She had it exclusively serviced at a quick change place but they never changed the filter over 75k miles and the engine seized- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. This is seriously the silliest rant I've seen here. Yes, my Ford Ecoboost takes about 5.5 quarts. I bought two 5 quart jugs before the first oil change. Used all of one, the other one is still on a shelf more than half full. In the subsequent three oil changes, I only had to buy one 5 quart jug. What is so hard about that? Having the extra around allows you to check and top off oil if needed between drain intervals.
So the first change cost me (DIY) $62, subsequent have been $35 for Penzoil Plat Synth and a Motorcraft filter.
Folks using the "free" service from BMW or other manufacturers are under maintaining their cars. BMWs should have OCI intervals of 5000-7000 miles, not the 10-12k intervals that BMW cheap out on. It's a common practice of manufacturers to falsely lower the perceived cost of ownership and it leaves you with a vehicle that can barely make it past 100k miles before it is needing major engine work. Same with the "lifetime" transmission fluids. Lifetime of 100k miles maybe.
Anyone who has been involved with the BMW club of America knows the real recommended maintenance intervals.

Every 5k seems overkill if running synthetic.
I do about 10k a year and change the oil once a year. Friend of mine owns a place so I trust them to do it right. About $85 for full synthetic.Things work out best for those who make the best of the way things work out.-John Wooden -

I was fine going 10K in my old Mercedes with a non turbo, port injected V8, but it also had an 8.5 quart capacity and used a durable fleece filter.
Every engine is different and driving habits also play into the mix.

Depends on the engine. 5K is good advice for any turbocharged direct injected engine. Fuel dilution and higher temps wear the oil down faster.

Of course, but @sucks2beme didn’t specify any particular type of car in the statement I quoted, so I thought we were talking about your average car.
What defines average car? More and more cars are DI and forced induction these days. Oil is cheap, new engines are not. I suppose it doesn't matter if you turn in cars for trade when they are out of warranty, but if you like to get 10+ years out of a vehicle, it is always best to follow the "severe duty" maintenance schedule.

The wife's car is a Hyundai. They are known to have issues.
A lot of car guys think 5k oil changes are a good idea. Better
safe than sorry. Given how little we drive, twice a year is certainly
Less than 5k between changes."The legitimate powers of government extend to such acts only as are injurious to others. But it does me no injury for my neighbour to say there are twenty gods, or no god. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg." --Thomas Jefferson -
Damn, I change oil & filter every 3,000 miles.

I use the "3" free oil changes, but I can use them whenever I want, not at a specified mileage. If that was the case none of mine would be free as after almost 2 years I'm only at 7K miles. I'll change it once a year for the first 3 years to get my freebies.
Also, how do you know more about how to maintain a BMW than BMW does? Telling people they should change at 5-7000 miles as an absolute, and that BMW (or insert whatever dealer) is wrong is....wrong. It's their product which they engineered so they might have a bit of insight
Now if one wants to be a bit OCD and do it at your OWN specified intervals that's totally fine. I err on the side of caution because I too feel (based on nothing) that 10K is too long. But if you use the specified oil then one will be fine.
I'm just being a bit of a devil's advocate as I hate seeing people tell the general public that the manufacturer is wrong on the service intervals. If they didn't pay for the first few you'd think they would tell people to change more often (even if not necessary) to increase service profits.
