Polk Monitor 11A Speakers

I picked up a pair of these second hand and want to know if anyone is familiar with them and what they are using for power into them. I have a Yamaha M-60 power amp, C-70,80 pre amp, and also have Sansui G-4700. Are people toeing them in, or do they do better facing out. I have them about 4 feet from the walls on both sides and their backs. Bass seems fine on them. Just wondering what tweaks can be done and if there's a better match for power.

That model was a one year (1986) wonder. It is the Monitor 10 in a slightly larger cabinet enabling the bottom end to go 2dB deeper.

The tweeters are the nasty SL2000. If you plan on keeping the speakers consider replacing those with the Polk RD0194-1 tweeters, which are a major improvement.

They are a Right/Left speaker as well. They "should be tagged" on back of cabinet. Great speaker. As far as power they are compatible with most receivers & amps above 50wpc.. You can look at Vintage Speaker section at that model to make sure you have the correct MW woofers as well. I've came across some that people put the wrong one in. Worth checking. Also. Do a air leak check. Push IN on passive & HOLD IN & the woofer will come out & it should stay out at least 3-5 seconds. If it stays out for less-there may be a leak in cabinet

The Monitor 11A is different than the Monitor 11 with the Peerless tweeter. I do not believe the 11A has a dedicated left and right cabinet. It's basically a larger Monitor 10.

    This is the 11A.

Oh. I didn't know that. Thanks

  • I've already swapped out the tweeters, and will check the woofer part as mentioned.

I was more curious as to what others are using for amplification. I don't see where these are set up for L and R. They are pretty clean throughout. Was wondering about recapping and what others do. I dont think they need it soundwise.

This is my 1st pair with the Polk name. My other speakers are Klipsch KG 5.2, Bozak Urban 302A, and a pair of Maggie SMGa. I have others as well, but these are used most often.

My tube gear doesn't seem to really do well with these.

Adcom, Parasound, Sunfire, Carver are all well received with Polk.
    Which tube gear?
I have heard older Polk speakers with tubes and they were a match made in heaven.

Yes, they do need the crossovers upgraded. Use high quality film caps and non-inductive resistors. Clarity CSA caps and Vishay-Mills resistors are good choices.

  • F1 nut- the pic you posted is actually of mine in my basement. Before the tweeter swap out. I had posted on AK prior to joining here. Not much info on my post though.

pitdogg2- the tube gear is a mono block set of Maggie 143 amps from the 50's. I had them redone and upgraded to put out slightly more power at about 22 watts. 6L6 tubes. The stereo amp I have is a 50's 6bq5 amp, so it doesn't have a lot of oomph.

I've also read that people are gluing the magnets on these as they become detached. Anyone have that issue?

I'd definitely do the magnets with JB weld epoxy.
    Nice amps.

I did some (vlittle) digging. Interesting info archived. Came across recent thread posted above. Valuable info is out there. When I had the Monitor 11s I really enjoyed them more then the Monitor 10s. I had to make room for other gear, so they moved along
