Bad Christmas for Me

Hey Polkies,

Haven’t been around much, life with a 16 month old and work has been a lot.

Bad day in Audiophile land for me. Long story short, some type of infection attacked my left inner ear and has led to 100 percent hearing loss in my left ear.

Being in the navy it took an act of god to get to a ENT specialist who diagnosed it right away (last night) but I lost precious treatment time navigating the waters of referrals and the primary care provider saying “it’s an ear infection, nothing to worry about”. I finally went to the ER 3 days after the total hearing loss and got immediately seen my the ENT specialists.

Started an aggressive oral steroid regime this morning. Doctors put full recovery at about the 30 percent likelihood range. With maybe another 30 percent of “medically significant recovery”.

Pretty damn devastated over here. On top of the general annoyances of only being to hear out of one ear, I am having balance issues and if I don’t recover one of my major hobbies is kaput

Sad Christmas for me. Not feeling especially cheerful. Understand it could be much worse and there are people dealing with things that make this issue look minuscule but hard to put that in perspective at this moment in time

Really sorry to read of your issue. I hope it all comes back to you. In the meantime, focus on what you do have. Your wife, new child. Easier said than done, I know. As much as you like music, you can still hear that cutest giggle ever from your little one.
Merry Christmas to you and your family and I hope the new year starts off much better than how this one is ending.

Damn - I sincerely hope that the effects of this can be mitigated to a significant degree. I had a similar experience with my eyesight a few months ago, and I certainly understand the cycle of fear-uncertainty-frustration-anger-resignation that you are feeling. Just take it a day at a time, and do your best to stay positive.

So sorry to hear this. I can't imagine how you must be feeling. One of the reasons I've decided lately to start buying my forever gear is partly for this reason. At 58, I'm on the downside of hearing. To me it's still excellent, but one never knows when it could be diminished or taken away.

I can still hear and pick up tiniest of nuances in gear. I'm sure just based on age I've lost a step compared to a young'in....lol

I really hope they can do something for you. If not naturally, the hearing device technology available is incredible. Perhaps something like that down the road can get your hearing back in that ear.

Also, not to sound overly litigious, but this sounds like a malpractice issue and perhaps a legal remedy is in order on your first doctor.

I'm sorry that your ear infection turned worse than the first doctor thought.

I pray you regain your hearing in that ear.

If not...It's good you have other hobbies.

The balance issue sucks big time.

They didn’t cover that with me. The assumption I think is that it is viral. I’m on both anti-biotics and the Prednisone at this point

Thanks for all the kind words everyone. Status quo here. Hoping for the best but prepared for the worst. The hearing would be one thing and I think I could deal with the challenges that brings, the loss of the ultimate enjoyment of music would suck and I would certainly offload all of my high end stuff as there is no point.

On the other side, the balance and focus thing will be very hard for me. A lot of what I love relies on having good balance. Biking, motorcycles, snowboarding etc. Both hearing and balance could constitute a loss of almost all of the stuff I enjoy in my free time. I did ride my motorcycle to the store yesterday, and that went well. Slow speed maneuvering is a bit more challenging but I got through it better than I expected.

I am just hoping the balance gets better or my body learns to cope with it.

Trying to focus on the good things.

    Merry Christmas to all.

Really sorry to hear about this.

I have to think once you start to heal, your balance should improve pretty rapidly. The human body is insanely adaptable. I can't imagine you'll be off your various bikes for too long.

    Wishing you a full recovery.

Sounds like they are covering you for bacterial with antibiotics.

The antibiotics were prescribed from my initial visit to my PCM, when they thought it was a bog standard ear infection. ENTs/ER prescribed the high dose prednisone as is standard with SSHL and “Sudden Hearing Loss”.

To this point, no improvement. Just terrible Tinnitus. Also lots of other weird stuff with my eyes being able to focus and stabilize and headaches. It’s going to be a long road but as long as my body learns to cope with the other stuff, I’ll learn to survive with the hearing. Good news is I don’t need to spend big money on stereo stuff anymore lol.

I’ll keep my DIY speakers and NAD M10V2 and pick up a cheaper record player/phone so I can still at least enjoy the music
