Speaker placement

I'm sure most of you guys know this already, but it doesn't hurt to review the fundamentals -- Play around with speaker placement.

Today, I moved each of my speakers about three inches closer (laterally) on my 2-channel rig and it made a noticeable difference. Then I moved them about 1 foot closer each and it sounded like an entirely new system. The Lsi7's were really jammin'. Vocals sound more realistic and the speakers blend much better together.

Initially, I was reluctant to move the speakers because now they are right in front of the living room windows. The WAF ain't gonna like it, so I'll have to put on her favorite music and let her listen to the "new" system so she can draw her own conclusion. So far it's the best tweak I've made, and it's FREE.
HT/2-channel Rig: Sony 50” LCD TV; Toshiba HD-A2 DVD player; Emotiva LMC-1 pre/pro; Rogue Audio M-120 monoblocks (modded); Placette RVC; Emotiva LPA-1 amp; Bada HD-22 tube CDP (modded); VMPS Tower II SE (fronts); DIY Clearwave Dynamic 4CC (center); Wharfedale Opus Tri-Surrounds (rear); and VMPS 215 sub

I couldn't agree more, and is something I have experimented with for a long time. Speaker placement is crucial to soundstaging and the overall harmonic value of any system, be it, HT or 2 channel. Some people though, I don't think, even know how good their system could be sounding with a little effort of experimentation. But, of course there are others that do, and just do it without a 2nd thought. It is most certainly one of the best tweaks a person can improve upon. Good post, Early!

Absolutely. Cheapest upgrade out there. I couldn't believe that just a few inches of movement made such a difference. The sweet spot for mine is 11.5" from the backwall, 9ft apart, and an inch of toe-in. I even noticed a difference replacing the cheese-ball plastic spikes with brass spikes.

If you turn your speakers around completely, so that they are facing the wall, they function just like a Bose.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.
